IN MEMORY OF LT. PETER B. LUND

LT Pete Lund of FDNY Rescue was tragically lost in the line of duty on

June 14, 2005 while operating at a House Fire with the Woodmere Volunteer Fire Department on Long Island, NY.

Pete began his Firefighting career in the late 1960's as a Volunteer with his hometown Volunteer Fire Department in Woodmere, NY. Pete served in many offices in Woodmere, including that of Chief for several years.

In 1973, Pete began his career with the Fire Department of New York. He earned his way to the elite rescue companies, spending much of his time with Rescue Company 2 in Brooklyn. After being promoted to lieutenant, Lt. Lund spent ten years with Rescue Company 3 in the Bronx before returning to his home at Rescue 2, where he remained until his retirement in 2003.

After 30 years of service in the FDNY, Pete remained an active Volunteer with Woodmere. He also was a member of the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department in Prince George's County, Maryland where he enjoyed fighting fire along side his son, Matt, and riding Tower 33 - which Pete always said reminded him of his "young years" at TL-120.

Lt. Lund was highly regarded by all who knew him. His endless wealth of firefighting knowledge was exceeded only by his desire to share his experiences with others. Pete was always upbeat, the first to help a brother in need, and just plain down to earth. He had phenomenal teaching and mentoring skills and no doubt inspired the careers of thousands of firefighters. Lt. Lund was no less than a modern firefighting legend and he will not be forgotten

Those of you who know me know that Pete Lund was a good friend of mine and very close to my heart. He was my inspiration in joining the Fire Department. I have a lot of great memories riding with Pete and the Firefighters of FDNY Rescue 2 (Brooklyn) and FDNY Rescue 3 (Bronx)

You can see Pete in action in some of the episodes of "The Bravest"

RIP VULCAN!

Tool History

"The Lund Bar"

The Lund Bar has an interesting history. Due to union agreements in the FDNY, the officers are permitted to carry a small tool for personal use only. I felt that I wanted a tool with a little heft to it so I approached the charter members of “JAF” and asked them to shrink a Halligan tool down for me so as not to cause union problems on the fire floor.

We simply took the middle 6" or 8" out of the center of the tool, prepared it for welding by bringing the two pieces to a point (to insure better welds) and then rejoined the two pieces with welds. After having one made for me, and seeing the success of the tool, other officers asked the men of “JAF” to make one for them.

After the welds had been ground down and made smooth, we put the finishing touches on the tool by first putting a line of wrapped medical tape under a layer of thick, rubber electrical tape to make the tool easier to grip. In the past couple of years, the tools have been made by Jimmy Jaget, Sam Melisi and Vinnie Tavella for me – I have tried not to burden any one of our expert welders too much!!!

Interestingly enough, I have noticed that Firemark Tools is now marketing a 20" Halligan Bar in their catalog but it was Jackass Fabrications that was in the forefront several years ago with this tool!!!

Pete Lund grinding the "Lund Bar" at FDNY Rescue 2

"JAF - Jack Ass Fabrications" is a joke with the Firefighters at Rescue 2

who custom made and often modified tools for better use such as "The Lund Bar"

sadly the Charter member Pete mentioned is R2 Firefighter Lincoln Quappe

who lost his life on September 11, 2001
