I'm a fan of the Montgomery County FD.

They are a county-based combination fire department. They are expecting 37 new Engines from Elite Fire Apparatus (never heard of them).

Anyways, I just found this note from the Chief describing the purchase, found it interesting, and decided to share it here.

Can you imagine this in Westchester? Montgomery County is on the border of Washington, DC, and contains some extremly weathy areas, and is developing what was once farmland into gigantic office parks, shopping centers, houses, and condos with lightening speed. It's not that much different then Westchester County (not firewise), just "newer".

I am very pleased to announce that the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue

Service through the Office of Procurement have recommended a tentative

awardee for Fire Department Pumpers, RFP # 6451000151 to Elite Fire

Apparatus, Inc. of Tilleda, WI.

This is the next step in our efforts to procure 37 like pumpers to carry the

all hazard mission of the department into the future. These units are

proposed with a top of the line Spartan Gladiator severe duty cab and

chassis, aluminum body, HALE Q-max pump with CAFSPRO, a 750 gallon booster

tank, two-twenty-five gallon foam cells and a 5-KW diesel generator. In

addition, the units are to be manufactured using a low profile "L"-shaped

tank with a rear suction that maximizes hose capacity and accessibility for

working around and on the rigs. Each unit will have multiple pre-connects,

dual supply beds, wagon pipe, and a pre connected blitz-fire. Two quick

throw ground ladders and two hard sleeves will be accessible from the rear

without climbing. Further, we will be able to maintain all of the features

of the high volume Q-max pump while adding the CAFS capability that many of

you have helped to assess over the past several years.

These units will be equipped with the latest technologies available to

assure the safety of the crew cab occupants while entering, exiting, and

riding in the vehicles. Special emphasis is provided for securing all

portable equipment including personal running gear, quick access EMS

compartments, and crew cab storage (climate controlled) areas for drugs and

narcotics. All compartments will be lockable for enhanced security. The

latest generation L-E-D lighting packages will be resident along with the

Federal Q2B and Power Call Sirens. The units will be lettered with the

Council of Government (COG) numbering system on five sides of the vehicle.

Latest generation braking, auxiliary braking, suspension and power train

components will be in place to assure rugged dependability and safety.

Our plan is to complete the requisite contract requirements by the end of

this month and build a single prototype unit in less than six months. This

first unit will have a Training Academy graphics package and will serve as

the model pumper and training rig to introduce the entire workforce to the

CAFS world while construction begins on the remaining units. We intend to

deliver approximately 12 units every six months so that 24 months from now

every first due engine-company will be operating with a full featured,

precisely equipped pumper!

I want to thank the Apparatus Section under the leadership of AC Steve Lohr

and Steve Lamphier, our own procurement staff, the Office of Procurement,

and most importantly, the Pumper Technical Specifications Committee

comprised of Chief George Brown, Battalion Chief Mike Hamilton, MFF Donnie

Simmons and Bethesda Shop Superintendent, Mr. Craig Ferguson. As a team they

have worked tirelessly through a long and arduous process to get us to the

present point. Their efforts to produce a detailed technical specification,

request for proposal, qualifications and selections analysis is unparalleled

in the MCFRS. Regional COG jurisdictions will have the opportunity to bridge

this contract if they so desire.

Since negotiations and contract development are in progress, this remains a

closed process. Therefore, QSC members and staff are prohibited from any

open discussion regarding the details of this RFP.

Again, congrats on a job well done by all involved! Remember, this will

mark an organizational change from many perspectives including how we fight

fire. We all need to be prepared to learn and train to assure we maximize

the potential of these vehicles.

Sound's like a well thought out investment. Is this the same sort of chassi the new LA County KMEs are on...because if i recall those are also severe duty as well. It sounds like these guys run ALS-FR engines? Does that mean at least one engine in every FD througout the county is career staffed or are these strategicly placed?

Montgomery County has most recently been using Pierce, with several deliveries of Engines, Tower Laders, and Tillers.
