White Plains rigs???

5 posts in this topic

Just a question that i've been curious about...Does anyone know why the City of White Plains FD likes commercial chassis so much? I've wondered this for quite some time, but after seeing the new E65, i had to see if anyone knew the reason why they continue to go with these style cab/chassis?

Thier city shops service the chassis's and they try to standardize between FD and DPW

The commercial chassis are also considerably cheaper than custom chassis. In the Albany area, they are quite popular in both Career and Volunteer FD's.

Ah ha, thanks guys! I can see where it makes sense as far as being cheaper & easier on the shops crew. I didn't even take into account that White Plains and the other larger cities have fleet maintenance. I'm sure those guys are used to working on International and Freightliner chassis, hence being easier than working on custom rigs.

Our rescue-pumper (2nd due) has an International cab/chassis & i don't care for it much. Its just that the cab is really small and leaves no room for equipment & forget trying to get geared up on the way to a call lol! As i said, its our 2nd due, so many times it may be just a driver & firefighter or officer, so its not such a big deal, but it also happens to be our m/a rig, which kind of stinks. I can't imagine the four-door cabs having much room either, thats why i was curious why WPFD favors them so much. On a good note, we have never had any major issues regarding the chassis, the rest of the rig however,is another story!

Thanks for the info/input guys!

Mike
