Children who said mom forced them to panhandle removed from home

YONKERS - Child Protective Services has taken four of five children away from an unemployed 37-year-old Yonkers woman who, police said, had turned some of them into panhandlers for her.

Antoinette Jones' four youngest children were removed after Yonkers City Court Judge Charles Wood issued a temporary order of protection barring her from any contact with them.

The children were staying with a friend of Jones' on Cliff Street after Wood made his ruling Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Yonkers police and CPS workers went to the Cliff Street house about 6:30 p.m. and removed her four youngest children, police said. Jones was not at her friend's house at the time.

The four children are two girls, ages 5 and 17, and two boys, 7 and 11 years old. Jones' 18-year-old daughter was not covered under the order.

Susan Tolchin, chief adviser to County Executive Andrew Spano, said she could not comment on the whereabouts of the children or any involvement by CPS.

In similar cases, Tolchin said, CPS typically looks for the best household to take custody of the children while making sure that the parent has no contact.

Yonkers police arrested Jones Monday night, suspecting that she was using her children to panhandle at supermarkets.

Their suspicions were further raised when her 11-year-old boy went missing at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

The boy's 18-year-old sister told police that her mother made them walk several miles from their 16 Orchard Place home to Pathmark at 1757 Central Park Ave. to beg customers exiting and entering the supermarket.

After they arrived at Pathmark, the older girl went to the restroom and her brother was gone when she came out, she told police.

The teen also told officers that she and her siblings were frequently forced by their mother to walk to supermarkets to panhandle, where they earned about $30 to $40 nightly.

The 11-year-old was later found.

Jones is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. She pleaded not guilty and was released without bail.

This job was ridiculous. Tied up YPD units for hours searching for a child whose mother sent him to panhandle. When we spoke to the family they were so helpful...hahaha... Evidently they allow this to happen routinely and he just walks off cause he is a wanderer! Hopefully she never sees the children again. Kudos to the person who decided to charge her in the matter!!!!!!! More of this should happen around the country...It is not fair to the rest of us that have children and are responsible. If you need a license to drive, maybe it is time to licensure pregnancy! Now not only did our tax dollars and time go to finding her child...now we will pay for him to be housed and cared for as well as the siblings and for her to be locked up!

Once again...this statement is in my opinion!
