BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese police used a high-pressure water cannon to flush out a murder suspect holed up in a hospital ward, local media reported on Wednesday.

Police in Shenyang, in the northeastern province of Liaoning, cornered Yu Wenyi in an eighth-floor hospital ward on Tuesday afternoon, after pursuing the 55-year-old in connection with the murder of his mother-in-law and son, the Liaoning Evening News said.

On the same afternoon, the body of a friend of Yu's ex-wife was found in her residence by a neighbour, the paper said.

Yu, carrying two knives, stacked three hospital beds together to barricade himself in and perched himself on a window ledge, the paper said.

Police set up an air cushion on the ground in case Yu jumped, and brought in a cherry-picker and firehose, the paper said.

"The cherry-picker slowly rose up, and two firemen took aim at the suspect," the paper said.

After two hours trying to persuade him to surrender, police ordered the firemen to open fire with the hose, the China Daily said.

Under the pressure of the spray, shot from about five metres (16 feet) away, Yu lost his grip and fell eight floors on to an air cushion where, unharmed, he was quickly detained by waiting police.

On Monday, a woman in Nanjing, capital of China's eastern province of Jiangsu, survived a plunge from a sixth-floor balcony after landing on a 20 cm-thick pile of excrement left by workers fixing sewage pipes, local media reported.
