Keep Back 200 FT or 500 FT?

I've always wondered why some rigs say 200 FT and why some say 500 FT.

Any ideas?

It seems it was started by DOT (fed and state) to keep motorist from tailgating responding apparatus and to prevent a motorist from slamming into the back of a rig while members used to ride the tail boards.

It was carried over after the ban of riding the tail boards to give the apparatus a buffer zone in case also it had to stop quick, say getting cut off at an intersection or needed to make a quick turn through traffic.

This would make sense if you think of the theory about trucks with "Vehicle makes frequent stops, keep back" stickers on them, same concept I believe.

LED's so brite they have to keep back 1 MILE!

I always keep a safe distance from ALL Emergency Vehicles

but that is just me.

You can put 100 FT, 200 FT, 500 FT or 1 MILE (haha)

If they don't "KEEP BACK" who will enforce it?

Motorists don't STOP for the Flashing Red Lights on a School Bus

or when we are coming at them Lights, Siren, and Air Horn.

The police in my village enforce it. They have multiple times, it is NYS V&T law.

§ 1217. Following emergency fire vehicles prohibited.

The driver of any vehicle other than one on official business shall not follow any authorized emergency fire vehicle in the same lane or an adjacent lane to the one being used by such fire vehicle at a distance closer than two hundred feet while such fire vehicle is displaying one or more red or combination red and white lights, or one white light which must be a revolving, rotating, flashing, oscillating or constantly moving light, nor shall such driver drive into or park his or vehicle within the block or where there is no block, within one thousand feet of where such fire vehicle has stopped in answer to a fire alarm.

I think it's 200-300 feet for pumpers, and 500 feet for ladders.

500 feet is in the CT General Statutes.

300ft in Jersey.

Think back to the days when guys rode the step....it provided some, if any, protection. Remember...those were also the days of 50 candle power bulbs in the warning lights. It also provides a bit of cushion, or supposed to, when you realize you are about to miss a turn or the hydrant you need to hit and jam on the brakes.
