Call for Uniformed Personnel to Participate in National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend Tribute

National Fallen Firefighters Foundation

Each year the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation pays tribute to those men and women lost in the line of duty the previous year. The National Memorial Weekend, held on the campus of the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg Maryland, is being held October 1st through the 3rd, 2004. Firefighters lost during 2003 will be honored at this year’s service.

On Sunday, October 3rd, you are asked to join with firefighters from across the country in paying tribute to America's fallen fire heroes and their survivors. The Sea of Blue will stand on the campus of the National Fire Academy to greet the families of our fallen fire heroes as they arrive for the National Memorial Service. Uniformed personnel will line the area of the campus where the families arrive, the family staging area, and the family seating area. The Sea of Blue will stand in tribute, as a show of support to each family member and department present.

The Sea of Blue was a major force during the 2002 Memorial Weekend in Washington DC. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation would like to increase the number of personnel participating in the Sea of Blue now that the Memorial Weekend is back at its home in Emmitsburg Maryland, the sight of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. It’s not too late to participate in this years Sea of Blue. By September 24th, participants are being asked to send an email to the Sea of Blue coordinator at Rkane@co.lancaster.pa.us or send a fax to 717-537-4196 and provide the following information:

Department name

Contact name

Phone number

E-mail address and

Number of personnel expected to attend

Uniform dress for this event is Class A uniform or best available.

Sea of Blue participants are encouraged to arrive on the NFA campus between 7:00 AM and 7:30 AM on October 3rd. Staging locations and instructions will be provided when the information above is received. Participants should allow ample time for security screening.

Please note that there will be no on-campus parking during the Memorial Weekend. Shuttle service is available from Mount Saint Mary’s University on Route 15 (Just south of the NFA Campus) to the campus throughout the weekend.

Also note that no apparatus will be allowed on the campus at any time due to security restrictions. All apparatus is also to park at Mount Saint Mary’s University and personnel are to take the shuttle bus service to the campus. Any department arriving by chartered bus may make arrangements for a special parking pass which will allow for parking adjacent to the NFA campus. This must be arranged in advance by sending email or fax as described above.

Any and all uniformed fire service personnel who wish to attend and participate in the Sea of Blue are welcome and encouraged to attend according to the NFFF. Additional information can be found on the NFFF web site at http://www.firehero.org
