Why didnt we hear about this?

5 posts in this topic

After a week of unrelenting news coverage surrounding the Sean Bell Queens shooting indictments and tired of hearing Al Sharpton bloviate to the masses, i feel it necessary to post the following news story. Chances are, you never heard about it on national or local media - i know i didn't.

Witness details Christian’s final hours

By JAMIE SATTERFIELD, satterfield@knews.com

January 25, 2007

Channon Christian was bound and conscious while her boyfriend was being beaten, shot and burned with gasoline.

Those terrifying details of her last hours are contained in an affidavit made public today in Knox County General Sessions Court.

The affidavit states that a woman was in the Chipman Street house when Christian was being held captive.

The woman told Knoxville Police Department Investigator Todd Childress "that during that time while the victim Christian was alive she witnessed the victim’s mouth being cleansed with some type of spray bottle of cleaning supply."

The affidavit also reveals that Christian’s body had been placed inside garbage bags and then stuffed into a large plastic trash can.

The affidavit was filed to support a search Wednesday of the house where Christian, 21, of West Knox County and Christopher Newsom, 23, of Halls were taken after allegedly being carjacked Jan. 7.

Among the items seized Wednesday were empty garbage bag boxes, lint trap from the drier, two spray bottles and several carpet samples.

Also today, two suspects who allegedly fled to Kentucky to avoid arrest in the fatal carjacking were arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Bruce Guyton. Both waived detention hearings and will be held until trial.

Letalvis "Rome" Cobbins and George "Detroit" Thomas had been awaiting transfer from Kentucky, where both were arrested a few days after the double slaying.

Cobbins is charged in the indictment with carjacking. Thomas is accused of serving as an accessory after the carjacking.

Also accused of carjacking in the indictment, which was handed up by a federal grand jury last week, is Cobbins’ brother, Lemaricus "Slim" Davidson. Convicted serial robber Eric Dewayne "E" Boyd joins Thomas on the alleged accessory list.

Boyd is accused of helping Davidson hide out in a vacant house in Northwest Knoxville. Thomas is accused of helping Cobbins flee to Kentucky.

However, all four suspects are blaming each other of various acts of violence in connection with the fatal carjacking.

A team of investigators led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Tracy Stone and David Jennings has been unusually tight-lipped about the case. What little is known comes from a handful of court records and statements made in U.S. District Court during various hearings.

So far, those details include the following account:

Gunmen confronted Christian and Newsom somewhere near the Washington Pike apartment complex where Christian had told her mother she and boyfriend Newsom were headed. The men wanted Christian’s Toyota 4Runner, but the couple wound up kidnapped.

The couple was forced at gunpoint to a home on Chipman Street. Court records have alleged that Newsom was shot, bound and burned. His body was found Jan. 7 abandoned along railroad tracks near the Chipman Street house.

Christian’s body was found two days later stuffed in a trash can in that same house. Authorities have not said how she was killed, but court records and statements in court have revealed that she was choked, beaten and raped.

Cobbins and Thomas claim Boyd killed Newsom and raped Christian. Boyd accuses Thomas of Newsom’s slaying and Davidson of Christian’s death. Cobbins allegedly has admitted a role in the carjacking.

Davidson and Boyd were arrested in Knoxville on Jan. 11 and made their initial court appearances last week. Cobbins and Thomas were arrested that same day in Lebanon, Ky., nearly 180 miles northwest of Knoxville.

So far, no charges have been filed in connection with the actual slayings. However, state prosecutors are working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which is handling the carjacking case.

Stone and Jennings have said in court that Cobbins and Davidson could face the death penalty if convicted in the federal carjacking case.

The above doesn't even begin to do justice to what actually happened, if you Google the victims names you will come across a number of blog entries and websites that give every nauseating detail. I just don't get it. This should garner NATIONAL news attention and outrage, but all your hearing is that the NYPD and Police Officers in general are out to get you. What in Gods name is this world coming to? Where is the Reverend on this one?

The Reverend Al S*** H*** isn't gonna open his big yapper on this. But you can bet if the roles were reversed, he'd have one hell of a lot to say!

These things happen with frighetning regularity. Unless it is particularly attractive to the national media it doesn't go much further than local or regional coverage. After a week long search a 6 year old was just found stuffed in a garbage bag in Georgia I believe. Make it an attractive middle class white kid, race based, or a public authority figure and the media is all over it.

Actually I remember hearing of this case when it was first being investigated when the female's body was found on Fox News. They did cover it for several hours.

Partyrock - heard about that yesterday, absolutely horrible story. ALS - interesting, Fox News is pretty good about getting halfway decent news out, im glad they did report it - even if it was only for a few hours.
