Position: Firefighter, GS-0081-4/FPL 5 Salary: 35,500 Annual Place of Work: US Army Garrison, DHPW, Fire & Emergency Services Div, Orange County West Point NY

Position Status: This is a Permanent position. -- Full Time Number of Vacancy: 1

Duties: Performs a variety of firefighting, fire prevention, and related aid and rescue work associated with buildings, shops, warehouses, fuel storage areas, and aircraft. Alternates in hose, ladder, hydrant, rescue, salvage or hand line operations. Controls and extinguishes fires, operates hose lines, makes forced entries, ventilates structures, evacuate or rescues occupants, removes supplies and equipment. Uses chemicals, axes, bars, hooks, gas masks and other firefighting equipment to extinguish fires and protect life and property. Inspects warehouses, shops, hospitals, offices and living quarters for violations of fire regulations.

Engages in hazardous materials containment and control. Operates alarm room equipment including radio and fire reporting facilities. Performs maintenance tasks on firefighting apparatus, equipment and facilities. Assist the injured by applying knowledge and training to immobilize for safe transport. Who May Apply: This is a Delegating Examining Unit position. Open to all U.S. Citizens Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP) eligibles.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: For GS-4: One year of specialized experience at the GS-3 is required. For GS-5: One year of specialized experience at the GS-4 is required. Specialized experience is experience in such duties which may include (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. OR

EDUCATION: Successful completion of a 2-year course of study in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study is qualifying for GS-4. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university with major study in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study is qualifying for GS-5. NOTES: Must obtain Firefighter I and II Certification within one year of employment for the GS-4 grade level, must currently have a Firefighter I and II Certification and Hazmat Awareness and Ops certifications for the GS-5 grade level. Verification of certification will be required upon selection. Shift work is required (72 hour work week). One year of experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at least the next lower grade or level requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled.

Other Information: Management may select at any of the grade levels announced. Noncompetitive promotion potential to target grade. May require shift work and/or work on rotating shifts to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays and in other situations. Applicants must comply with the Exceptional Family Member Program requirements. Permanent Change of Station (PCS) expenses are not authorized. Other Requirements: Position is designated as Emergency Essential. A medical examination is required. Must comply with Drug Abuse Testing Program requirements. Must obtain and maintain a Class D license. Maximum 37 years of age restriction. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.

Direct Deposit of Pay is Required. Position requires employee to wear a uniform and/or protective clothing. One year trial/probationary period is required.
