Do any of the NYS courses add up to a Connecticut FF I certification?

I spoke with a Captain from the New Canaan FD by phone and he said that Conn. residency was required as well as Conn. FF 1, with apparently no exception. The only thing I could think of, that I did not ask him, was if Nationally Certified FF 1 was acceptable. EMT is not required.

So if you have a National firefighter I and II but your not a resident, you cannot get the job? That blows!

I would encourage anyone intrested or with any questions to call the NCFD at the number provided. Maybe there are exceptions. If any of the info posted is inaccurate please post the correct/updated information.

New Canaan FD is a sweet gig. It's going to be extremly competitive though. If anybody has any general questions, feel free to ask and I will either try and answer or get the answer for you.

(I work ALS in the area)

Thanks Seth: If you could make a quick mention of the residency thing that would be great. That would kinda stink if there were no exceptions to out of the area

Hello,

Just wanted you guys to know that a National FF certification works for this job, but not a New York one

I can not speak for the residency requirement, but the FF certification requirement is not up for discussion.

In any case, just thought I would add my .02

Talk soon!

Erik

As far as the residency requirment goes,as far as I know, there is no official residency requirment. However, I understand that the department likes you to live in close proximity (New Canaan, Norwalk,Stamford, etc) because they rely heavily on call in. (Which you can make a fortune off of)

I'm not too sure about counting NY certification out. That held true about the old training courses.

If you have taken the National Exam, even in NY, and have the NPQS certificate it should be good in any of the states across the nation that accept NPQS or IFSAC.

NY only became certified with the NPQS, I believe in 2001. If you only took the FF1 class, that does not count. You must meet the other requirements and take the National Exam.
