EMS bike unit protocols

4 posts in this topic

Hello all,

I have been assigned/volunteered to put together a EMS Bike Unit at one of my agencies. I have made some headway in finding start up packets, but if anyones oraganization has protocols for such a unit it would be a great help in my project, I would be much obliged. Thanks. Also, if anyone also has any general hints/experience with this, please let me know. Stay safe!

Stay safe!

This is Mamaroneck EMS SOP's for our Bike unit's,

The purpose of the Bike Patrol will be to provide immediate basic

care at events where there will be a heavy population and where the ambulance will have

a longer response time. The bike patrol will operate

where special events are taking place. The bike

patrol will only operate at times when there is a crew staffing the ambulance for primary

responses.

At all times, the bike patrol must consist of 2 members, one of which must be an EMT

The

officers must approve both members. The EMT will be responsible for the operations of

the bike patrol while on duty. Both members must stay together at all times and both

members must maintain radio communication with The EMS HQ and with the Village Police

Department.

The bikes must be equipped with the following safety equipment:

· Headlight

· Tail light

· Reflectors

· Kickstand

· Audible warning device (whistle allowed)

· Water bottle (for drinking not irrigation)

· Trunk rack (to carry equipment)

EMS will provide the following equipment. The remainder of the equipment must be

provided by the members.

· Headlight

· Tail light

· Equipment bag

· Portable radios

· Reflective vests

· Audible warning device

Between the 2 bikes, a minimum amount of equipment must be carried. A list is attached.

This list will be used as a Check List must be filled out every time the bikes are used. The

EMT may choose to carry additional equipment, but none may be removed. Oxygen may

not be carried on the bikes. EMT’s may choose to use their own bag that may be arranged

however they like, but there must be a minimum amount of equipment as specified in the

Bike Equipment Checklist (BEC)

The uniform for the bike patrol will consist of either blue uniform pants or blue uniform

shorts. If pants are worn, there must be a strap to go around the bottom of the right leg to

prevent the pants from being caught in the chain. If the bike has a permanent chain guard,

the strap is not required. For a shirt, either a reflective bike patrol style shirt may be worn,

or a choice of the blue polo style shirt or white uniform shirt may be worn, but a

reflective vest must be worn over the shirt. Sneakers must be worn, black is preferred.

Somewhere on either the uniform or the equipment bag must be a MEMS patch. EMT’s

must also have an EMT patch on their uniform (or bag if they choose to use their own

bag and not have a patch on their shirt.

The team must call police headquarters at the start of the shift to let them know that there

will be a bike team. Let them know where you will be. The radio designations will be

“EMS BIKE 1” and “EMS BIKE 2” with the exception of the officers who will use their

unit number. The EMT in charge of the team will always be “EMS BIKE 1”.

Try all the search engines as well. You can find great policies on there. Scan, "find and replace," tweek small stuff to fit your agency and you've got a nice policy with 1/2 the work.
