Dislodged White Plains fire hydrant disappears

By RICHARD LIEBSON

THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: January 6, 2007)

WHITE PLAINS - Dogs in the Gedney neighborhood most likely were seeking relief alternatives yesterday after a fire hydrant at Prescott and Ogden avenues was stolen.

The standard yellow hydrant was ripped from the ground Wednesday afternoon when a police Emergency Services truck that was rushing on Ogden to help an infant in distress smashed into a 2006 Mercedes- Benz station wagon on Prescott.

The impact sent the wagon sideways for about 25 yards, hitting a curb, a tree and the hydrant before coming to rest on its roof.

The station wagon's driver, a 55-year-old Scarsdale woman, was taken to White Plains Hospital Center, along with two police officers who were in the truck; all were treated for minor injures and released.

The woman's dog was killed in the accident. The baby turned out to be OK.

According to a police report, city Water Department workers went to retrieve the $2,000 hydrant about 9:20 a.m. Thursday, but it was gone.

Deputy Public Safety Commissioner Daniel Jackson declined to comment on the hydrant theft or the ongoing investigation yesterday.

At last check, the curb and tree were still at the corner.
