Salvation Army & The Fire Scene

3 posts in this topic

The other day, I noticed a brand new Salvation Army canteen truck all decked out in LED traveling down Secor Road in Hartsdale (not responding)

I'm curious....how/when is this unit dispatched, how is it staffed, and is it in anyones assignment for when they have a large fire?

Also, anyone know where it is stationed so I could get a photo to show you people.

The truck is dispatched to larger incidents, if I recall usually 3rd alarms and above. It goes to provide rehab for fire crews and to assist w/ displaced families etc. As for dispatch, I'm not sure if its self or officially assigned, but I know the driver (one person, sometimes an EMT) carries a radio issued by FDNY and has a official FDNY designation. I believe this unit is on call 24/7. I am curious to know the boundaries if any, of its response because I have heard of them going pretty far into Westchester and upstate.

If that is the one out of the Bronx, I know it responded mutual aid to assist our canteen at the Canal St fire in Stamford. There were three Salvation Army Canteens there, Stamford's, The Bronx, and I believe Bridgeport.

On a side note, Stamford's canteen which is new to us (only a couple of years in town) is a 1978 truck that formerly served in Providence, RI and Philladelphia, PA. It is quartered at the Salvation Army Corps, outside in the rear parking lot.

I will try to find out about the NYC one, and see if I can get you a phot shoot. I know I have a picture of the Canteens together on Canal St, I will have to look for it.
