NEW CITY - A bomb squad robot has been sent into the buildings where a man has apparently been holed up for nearly five hours, police said about 4:45 p.m. today.

Earlier, tear gas canisters were fired into three buildings on the property at Saw Mill and Buena Vista roads.

Clarkstown Police Administrative Sgt. Harry Baumann said the tear gas was fired about 3:15 p.m. with grenade launchers.

Police snipers, negotiators and a critical incident team responded to a call about an emotionally disturbed person at the home shortly before noon today.

Baumann said the house was completely surrounded after officers heard gunshots and called for assistance.

It was unclear whether anyone else was inside.

A reverse 911 notification was completed earlier today to all neighboring homes.

Area roads about a half-mile in each direction are closed.

Police from Clarkstown, Haverstraw, Ramapo, the Rockland County Sheriff's Patrol, and New York state responded, as well as the county chopper, ambulances and paramedics
