Axtell Firefighter Dies Of Heart Attack After Battling Fire

AXTELL, Neb. -- Shortly after battling a fire early Friday, an Axtell volunteer firefighter died of a heart attack.

Leo Soderquist, 64, went out on a fire call shortly after midnight Friday at a house about eight miles north of town.

Fire Chief Kym Rush said Soderquist suffered a heart attack after firefighters returned to the station.

He was taken to a Kearney hospital where he died.

Soderquist had been with the fire department 36 years. He was the second generation of firefighters in his family, and his son is also a firefighter.

Soderquist owned a cabinetry business in Axtell. Rush said Soderquist was a big part of the community and was always willing to help.

Soderquist is survived by his wife and three children.
