Initial Summary:   

Firefighter Whittaker was responding to a mutual aid alarm on Harkers Island operating fire department apparatus.

At 0106hrs, 3.9 miles from the scene of the reported arson-caused residential structure fire, FF Whittaker apparently suffered a heart attack which as operator initiated the apparatus MVA causing it to leave the roadway, coming to final resting position after striking a tree.

The collision caused extensive damage to front end of the large fire utility type apparatus.

None of the other crew members (including the department chief) on the apparatus, who provided emergency medical care for Whittaker until medical transport arrived, were injured.

The apparatus was very badly damaged and in fact had to be cut away from the tree; only Whittaker was reported to have been wearing his safety belt.
