Giugiaro’s Mustang: A True Italian Stallion

By JERRY GARRETT

The New York Times

Is it real?

Must be, because spy photographers snapped one at an autoroute service plaza in Italy recently, filling up. Display-only concepts don’t run on freeways and don’t need gas.

What’s the point?

The current Mustang is a design landmark, but what will the company do to update its retro styling when a new model is needed in a few years? Giugiaro, the Italian design studio, has a better idea, if Dearborn is listening.

The company line:

“We call it ‘The Italian Job,’ †J Mays, Ford’s design chief, said. “It reinforces the global appeal of Mustang, yet it’s right at home in L.A. – America’s most enthusiastic performance and muscle car market.â€

The view from here:

Ford finally seems to have figured out that there is something to this “brand equity†notion after all. Kill Taurus, kill Continental, but not this. Keeping the Mustang alive is essential.

What makes it tick?

A 500-horsepower supercharged V-8 guaranteed to go from zero to traffic court in less than five seconds.

How much, how soon?

2010, if it comes at all, and maybe only in Europe. If it turns out to be a Europe-only model, expect a premium price tag.

How’s it look? Why does it seem the Italians are the only ones who know how to shape a truly sexy beast?
