Does it hurt the effictiveness of the tool if you paint the head of the axe, the business end of a pike pole or some other tool?

the working end of tools should be kept clean, free of rust and not painted. painting hides any defects or normal visable damage. refer to your essentials book with regards to varrious care of hand tools.

It sounds like HFD23 is on the mark only small area's of the tool should be marked as painting could hide cracks or defects, after each use the tools should be inspected for defects and or cracks these could be hidden by paint.
