POLICE COMMUNICATIONS OPERATOR

NASSAU COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT, NASSAU COUNTY VILLAGES, AND PORT WASHINGTON POLICE DISTRICT

 

SALARY: $26,634 - $51,800. Note: After six months of service, salary increases to $30,186. After one year of service, salary increases to $39,246.

The fee for candidates on Public Assistance in Nassau County will be waived. On the application indicate your Public Assistance claim number which will be verified with the Nassau County Department of Social Services.

NOTE: In conformance with sections 85-a and 85-b of the Civil Service Law, (85-a) children of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty and (85-B) siblings of firefighters and police officers having died in the performance of duty as a natural and proximate result of either the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001 or in the subsequent rescue effort, shall be entitled to receive an additional ten points in a competitive examination for original appointment in the same municipality in which his or her parent/sibling has served. If you are qualified to participate in this examination and meet one of the above criteria, please inform this office of this matter when you submit your application for examination. A candidate claiming such credit has a minimum of two months from the application deadline to provide the necessary documentation to verify additional credit eligibility. However, no credit may be added after the eligible list has been establish

NOTE: CANDIDATES WHO HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF NASSAU COUNTY AND/OR SUFFOLK COUNTY AND/OR QUEENS COUNTY FOR AT LEAST TWELVE MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN TEST MAY PARTICIPATE IN THIS EXAMINATION, BUT WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR APPOINTMENT TO THE NASSAU COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT ONLY. PREFERENCE IN APPOINTMENT MAY BE GIVEN TO SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WHO ARE LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE APPOINTING JURISDICTION.

NOTE: THE STANDARD ONE YEAR NASSAU COUNTY RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT APPLIES FOR POSITIONS IN NASSAU COUNTY VILLAGES AND THE PORT WASHINGTON POLICE DISTRICT.

NOTE: THE VILLAGES OF FREEPORT AND HEMPSTEAD HAVE SPECIAL RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS WHICH MUST BE SATISFIED.

TOTAL TIME ALLOWED FOR EXAMINATIONS HELD ON THIS DATE MAY NOT EXCEED EIGHT HOURS.

DUTIES: Receives emergency calls, monitors and transfers calls on a telephone console, operates a computerized dispatch system, and dispatches radio messages to police vehicles; performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be met on or before the date of the written test:

Graduation from high school

and, either

A. Two years of satisfactory general work experience;

or

B. Two years of active military service with discharge under honorable conditions.

NOTE: Education from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university may be substituted for the experience outlined in A, above, on a year-for-year basis.

Qualification Requirements

Candidates are required to pass a background investigation conducted by the Civil Service Commission, and a medical examination which includes, but is not limited to, speech, hearing, and color vision tests.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, DRUG TESTING AND FINGERPRINTING: According to Civil Service Law and/or Policy of this Commission, a background investigation, substance abuse screening and fingerprint check is required. Each candidate will be required to provide a waiver and release permitting the Commission to disclose to the candidates current employer any positive test results. Pursuant to Chapter 548 of the laws of 1976, the Division of Criminal Justice Services requires each fingerprint search request to be accompanied by a fee. This fee must be submitted by the candidate. The fee is usually $75.00. The refusal of any candidate to submit the required fee shall, in itself, disqualify a candidate from being placed on an eligible list for certification. You will be instructed at the appropriate time when and how to submit payment.

NOTE: SEE ITEMS NOS. 1 AND 2 OF GENERAL INFORMATION.

SUBJECT OF EXAMINATION: WRITTEN TEST designed to test for knowledge, skills and/or abilities in such areas as:

1. SPELLING - These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to identify misspelled words.

2. FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS - These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to understand and follow directions. Typical questions will include determining the course of action and appropriateness of certain actions based on directions given in a 'simulated' training manual.

3. NAME AND NUMBER CHECKING - These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to distinguish between names, titles and phone numbers that are almost exactly alike.

4. CODING AND DECODING INFORMATION - These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to encode and decode information. Typical questions will include coding information and interpreting given codes according to the directions provided.

5. MAP READING AND ANALYSIS - These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to analyze information provided in maps and in written form. Typical questions will include determining routes of travel from Point A to Point B and the direction (north, south, east and west) of locations on the map. (Since the map presented is fictitious, knowledge of actual locations is not required to answer these questions.)

NOTE: Candidates may want to bring several different colored pens/pencils to the examination in order to highlight certain areas of the map.

6. DEALING WITH PEOPLE - These questions are designed to test a candidate's ability to function in a responsible manner when dealing with the public in-person or on the telephone. Typical questions will include determining the most appropriate course of action to take in a given situation.

NOTE: Unless otherwise notified, candidates are permitted to use quiet, hand held, solar or battery powered calculators. Devices with typewriter keyboards such as computers, spell-checkers, personal digital assistants, address books, language translators, dictionaries, and any similar devices are prohibited.

NOTE: If you have not received notice within three days of the date of the examination, call the Commission (572-2702).

NOTE: The eligible list will be established on the basis of the scores received on the written test. However, in order to qualify for appointment to the Nassau County Police Department and several of the village police departments, candidates must pass a qualifying keyboard performance test, which will be administered at a later date.
