Firehouse.Com News

City of Miami, Okla. Firefighter Bill Bunch is in critical condition after falling from a bridge while fighting a tractor trailer fire Monday, Nov. 13, according to Chief Kevin Trease.

Trease said the six-year veteran was on a hose line around 9:30 p.m. when he jumped over a concrete median, not realizing there was no ground on the other side.

He fell more than 35 feet before being airlifted to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo.

Trease said Bunch suffered multiple injuries but said that details are currently scarce.

"We've all have sort of been walking zombies all day, waiting (on new information). All we can do is wait," he said.

"We're kind of just numb right now. All of our thoughts are focused are toward him, but we are still here to do a job.

"Hopefully in a day or so he can improve and pull through this."

Why did he jump over the barrier? Explosion? Oncoming traffic? Just curious.

Probably thought he was just gonna get a better angle of the opposite side of the car. Hope he makes it. Valuable lesson though about operating anywhere out of the norm and complacency.

You know what they say...that first step is a doozy.
