Proper Handling Of Gas Leaks

3 posts in this topic

with the recent post of the co calls lets open n go with gas leaks, yesterday in huntington LI a contractor ruptured a gas line to a private dwelling. the structure was evacuated immediately and within minutes the structure was leveled. what is your procedure? do your members take these calls lightly? complacency kills and this is one type of emergency where many can get complacent! about 2 months ago in MV we had a service line leaking in the basement of a 2 1/2 story wood frame.upon arrival the con ed service man was looking for the curb box to isolate the flow of gas. he stated that it was a strong possibility that this house would have blew up if it found an ignition source. be safe!

You mean we aren't suppose to pull up and operate directly in front of the structure?

Excellent post Hudson.

Another key point is you have to understand your enemy(ies). If your not familiar with the flammable gases we deal with, then you are a great disadvantage. You have to know what to look for and where and what its properties are and how it may react. As said before if you're relying on the gas meter's alarm to go off, to tell you something may be wrong, then you are wrong and dangerous. You must know how your meter gives readings, what the alarm values are set for and what the Lel/Uel for the gas you are dealing with is at.

how the depts with the mask up for all gas leaks policy? without the meter you aint gonna smell the problem, and also remember when venting that full of gas oder area, the reason it didnt ignite in the first place it may have been too rich, venting will bring it right thru the explosive range on the way back down be prepapred
