ESU Vs. FD

1 post in this topic

I think White Plains has the most ingenious approach to it.  Their FD Rescue and PD ESU are housed together, they train together, they respond together and I've heard no complaints.  Rather than try to duplicate effort and capabilities, they're trying to complement each other.

Kudo's to WP for this effort!  Maybe we can all learn from it!

One of the reasons White Plains has no problems is because they do not have any extrication equipment. That is a problem because they are first on the scene almost everytime with nothing to do but patient stabilization. I think duplication of services in certain areas are good, especially extrication. We all know on a really bad pin, it is all hands working with alomost every tool, whether you are the PD or FD. The other advantage is that you are providing the citizens with the maximum protection at all times. What happens if ESU has a barricade and a pin comes in? And what happens when FD has a 2 alarm fire? Each component can compliment one another and provide maximum public safety. White plains is unique with 287 and other high speed arteries, but White Plains policy makers want an ESU, but they have put restrictions on them due to politics when public safety and common sense should pevail. As far as trench, high angle, low angle, water rescue, and other emergencies as a policy maker to have police and firefighters working together and trained is an excellent idea.
