Just Got Back From Seeing "Borat"

13 posts in this topic

Just got back from seeing Borat (the movie), and I haven't laughed so hard at a movie in a long, long time.

It's very well done, albeit their are some explicit and gross scenes.

Very clever concept, and Sasha Cohen really pulled this off well.

I thought it looked dumb too, but the more I heard about it, the more I wanted to see it.

Borat (played by "Ali G" star Sascha Baron Cohen) is a reporter from the nation of Kazakhstan to learn leassons from Americans.

Even though Cohen's charecter is fictional, many Americans think he is for real, and it is extremly funny to see the interactions. It is outrageous some of the stuff he does, and the way people react to it.

Besides being funny, it's really interesting to see how bigotry is still alive and well, especially in the South, in this country.

As I mentioned, it's a very clever concept for a film. Of course it is dumb, but at the same time funny and smart if that makes sense.

It was great! Very stupid at times, but it's an interesting poke at American culture.

I mean, come on, a guy knows nothing about this country and he comes here so he can spend all his time chasing Pamela Anderson across the country. Brilliant.

Saw it this past weekend and I was rolling in my seat! It definitely had its moments of being stupid, but overall, i thought it was HILARIOUS! So many questionable pokes at ethnic groups, but I guess it is ok, with the actor being that religion himself.

'Borat' barred from Russian movie theaters

Nov 09 5:55 AM US/Eastern

AFP

Russian authorities have refused to license the "Borat" comedy film that has taken US box offices by storm over fear it would offend audiences here, The Moscow Times daily reported.

"The film contains material that some viewers may consider offensive to certain nationalities and religions," the paper quoted Yury Vasyuchkov, the head of the agency that licenses films for theater distribution, as saying on Thursday.

If the ban is upheld, the movie, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," would be one of the first non-pornographic films banned in Russia since the breakup of the Soviet Union.

The film, starring English comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, is about a fictional misogynistic, wife-beating Kazakh journalist who depicts Kazakhstan as a country whose people are addicted to horse urine and are fond of rape, incest and shooting dogs.

The movie had been scheduled to open in 300 theaters nationwide in Russia on November 30 and the distributor, 20th Century Fox in Russia, can still appeal against the Federal Culture and Cinematography Agency's refusal to grant the license.

Borat spanked by angry Yank

By EMILY SMITH

THE SUN

US Editor

November 13, 2006

BORAT star Sacha Baron Cohen was beaten up by a passer-by after he tried to play a prank as his alter ego.

He approached the man and said: “I like your clothings. Are nice! Please may I buying? I want have sex with it.â€

But the bystander didn’t see the joke. He took one look at Cohen and punched him in the face.

The funnyman  — known for his Borat catchphrase “Jagshemash!†— yelled for help but was slugged again and again.

He was rescued by actor pal Hugh Laurie who had been on his way to a New York bar with Cohen.

Laurie rushed to help and pushed the man away as Cohen struggled to his feet. A pal of Cohen said: “Sacha couldn’t resist playing the fool as Borat, but picked on the wrong person.

“I guess this guy thought he was being attacked by someone unstable and lashed out. Sacha is very lucky he didn’t get a much worse beating.â€

The incident took place after Laurie and Cohen appeared on the US TV show Saturday Night Live. The Brit comics were on their way to a late dinner when Laurie suggested they visit a bar in Manhattan.

Laurie, 47, told friends he feared Cohen was going to get badly beaten up. Luckily, 35-year-old Cohen did not receive any lasting scars.

Studio chiefs have warned Cohen to avoid pretending to be the spoof Kazakhstan TV reporter on the streets. Since the film was launched he has only appeared in character while promoting the movie on American television shows.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is tipped to become the highest grossing comedy of all time.

A FOREIGN exchange firm is thanking Borat for sparking a surge in travel to Kazakhstan. Travelex has ordered £500,000 worth of its Tenge currency to cope with the boom and a spokesman said: “It’s down to Borat.â€

But the Romanian village of Glod is SUING Borat for ridiculing locals after filming movie scenes there. A one-armed resident said: “It’s disgusting.â€
