High-Rise Firefighting In Westchester County

Elmsford FD carries the following:

A 100 foot length of 2 inch (with smooth bore nozzle, 1 inch tip) Niedner lightweight hi-rise hose, rolled double donut, carried in a hi-rise hose bag.

Two additional 50 foot lengths, rolled double donut, are carried in another bag.

A utility bag with a 15 foot length of 3 inch Niedner lightweight hi-rise hose, with pressure gauge and double gated wye.

Also carried in this bag is a Stillson wrench, spanner wrenches, hose straps, door chocks and a fog tip for the smooth bore nozzles (for venting and/or overhaul).

Also carried by one engine are four folded 50 foot lengths of 2 1/2 inch (with smooth bore nozzle, 1 1/8 inch tip) Niedner lightweight hi-rise hose.

All comes down to manpower. A department can have all the best tools, nozzles, hoses, and blankets on their trucks, but if you dont have the manpower to use them it does nobody any good. Some departments probably would be at a 2nd alarm or so before getting the first line streched.

Hey Hudson what the hell is the control man and how do i get one of those!!! HAHAHA 3 Person engine company, driver, officer and nozzleman

It was nice when we had the 4th man on all engines he was the "control"

but somehow we and all the rest of the short handed depts get the job done!!!

TIP 1, the officer should check the floor below to find out where the apt is, in case of lights out condition on the fire floor, ah while i am on a roll, check the staircase, if you are in scissor stairs you will be on the other end of the hallway on the next floor up

as someone else mentioned this is where the TIC is needed door left open to fire apt, heavy smoke condition in the hallway, the TIC will find the heat/ fire venting from the apt. "That is cus we didnt take the time to suvey the floor below" or we got bad info from as to what apt it really was

It usually depends though Bob on what squad or group is working, whether or not the job gets done. Some guys feel they got the job done as they're standing there looking at another urban renewal parking lot.
