OSSINING - A volunteer firefighter who was in the neighborhood helped a startled couple get out of their smoky house when a fire broke out in their kitchen this morning and they awoke to the smell of smoke.

The volunteer, Capt. Christopher Kruse, was flushing hydrants with the highway department just around the corner when the fire broke out shortly after 4:15 a.m. at 24 Fuller Road. He entered the smoky house and helped the man and woman down the stairs, Ossining Fire Chief Mauro Santucci said.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation as a precaution, the chief said. No other injuries were reported.

The fire started in an electrical outlet behind the refrigerator, according to the fire department. Some 75 volunteers responded and extinguished the fire in 10 minutes, before it did great damage to other rooms of the home, the chief said
