FF James E. Bowler of Rescue 2 was awarded the James Gordon Bennett Medal the rescue of a woman at Bk box 493, 224 York Street.

Jan 5th an arsonist sturck the Hotel Astor Ballroom

In May.. 4 Fireboats, 5 Engines were sent to Jersey City to help with a pier fire.

The New Verrazano bridge opened this will save 30 to 60 minutes in responding to Staten Island. The ferry will now be a secondary means

Research into the the problems of rooftop heliports on skyscrapers and the new World Trade Center and Civic Center were done to determine effects on Department operations.

Super Pumper Unit will soon join the fire fighting force.

Division of Safety was created

On Jan 31 after 8 months the fireboat John Purroy Mitchel was placed back in service total cost of $100,000. Two WWII surplus steam powered electic generators were used to power the fire pumps. Parts were no longer availble for the refurb.
