Um, I say we BURN HER!!!!

WTF is wrong with people?! I mean seriously - why are people going so f*ing crazy?

School shootings by ADULTS?!

A woman in Erie, PA. threw her baby at her boyfriend earlier this week in a fight and the child has a skull fracture and a brain hemmorage?!

And now, this?!

I don't know what else to say, I am sorry for ranting but GRRRRRRRRRRR.

Anyone else find this stuff nauseating? I just want to hit these people.

I took a peds burn (30% 3rd degree) to Jacobi last winter and was promptly told we went to the wrong place. Pediatric burns should all go to Cornell as far as they were concerned. Have any of the folks on the board heard this before?

I feel the same way mad.gif , some people should have a tattoo permanently imprinted on their foreheads saying:

BARRED FROM PROCREATION

DIAL 911 IF YOU SEE ME WITH CHILD

While you were not wrong for going to Jacobi, unofficially Cornell would be better suited for such a young Peds. Its one of those things where you don't know unless you're in the know. The catch is...is your pt stable enough to make it and will med control allow you to skip Jacobi?

I too feel ya Muns! One of my biggest pet-pieves is anything negatively dealing with children. I get soo pissed when i see un-restrained children in cars or parents driving like complete a-holes with thier kids in the car. Deliberately burning your child though? WTF? These skells should have their children taken away from them for good and be locked up for as long as possible.

Part of the problem (IMO) is that any jack-a** can have a child. There is testing for everything else in this great world, like drivers tests, civil service tests and promotional tests, but there is no test to bring a child into this world. The majority of people in these cases are jobless, welfare mooching scumbags who can't care for themselves, much less a child. It makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to see and hear about this crap!

I was working in southeast Queens at the time, so it was a toss-up between Cornell, Jacobi and NUMC. I would have gone to Cornell, but the EMT lieutenant ordered us to go to Jacobi. I have learned, through poor experiences, to never let a lieutenant direct patient care and that Cornell is the only place to go with the burned patient. Although, this goes for any serious pediatric patient, there are hospitals that are technically approved for the care of pediatrics, yet they really shouldn't be. The truly sick (non-burned) kids all end up at LIJ or Columbia-Presbyterian.

What about montefiore? Its my understanding that they have a very capable peds ED and wing (I walked through it while i was a student doing ride time w/ OLM).

Montifiore in NOT a burn center.

If I had to choose a burn center for Peds, I'd say go medical center. Cornell is too far away.

But Jacobi is closer from Yonkers than Westchester, no?

Yes, but the concern isn't just getting to a burn center, but to one that is capable/adept at treating children.

Right. But looking at Jacobi's profile - they accept burn patients of all ages. I'm on Westchester's website now trying to determine what they offer in the way of peds burn patients - but cant find anything particular. ( I only inquire because i have limited experience with Westchester, having only used it as a Trauma center)

Edit: after doing some reading on the burn unit - would one opt to bring a pt there because its a regional Advanced Wound Therapy and Hyperbaric Center? I guess the more general question is (without knowing any physician there personally) would this merit an extended transport (my biggest concern would be that the pt. has been in compensating shock and now runs the risk of quickly de-compensating enroute)?

I think it varies a little depending on where in Yonkers you are.

American Burn Association Verfied Burn Centers: (only 2 in the entire State)

NEW YORK

New York

William Randolph Hearst Burn Center

7/13/06 to 7/13/09

Valhalla

Westchester Medical Center Burn Center

5/4/06 to 5/4/09

(This is different from NYS recognition for EMS purposes. This is the gold standard among Burn Centers themselves.)
