Putting Water On The Flames

FireEMSAlpha.com is proud to announce our latest article from our newest author, Sub Officer Andy Fish from the South Wales Fire Serivce in England.

PUTTING WATER ON THE FLAMES-

HOW DIFFERENT CAN IT BE ?

Having been invited to contribute to this web site I felt that my first task should be to give a little insight in to how fighting fire here in the UK differs from that in the United States. Perhaps the easiest way to do this is to compare a UK “pumping appliance†to a US “Engine†and look at just how, and why, they are different. After all they are both designed to do the same thing, put water on the flames.

Before I begin my comparison however it might be worth me explaining to those American readers some very significant facts that make a huge difference to the way in which UK firefighters work compared to their brothers on the other side of the Atlantic.

It's a fascinating article about the basic differences in UK and US firefighting apparatus.

Very much enjoyed Sub Officer (Capt. in the States) Fish's article. Particularly interesting was how building construction in the UK has dictated apparatus design and, the UK's fire service use of dual pumps rated to 420psi to minimize water usage.

Learn something every day.

Cheers...

H.
