Metro-North Harmon Shops Open House Oct. 14th

5 posts in this topic

I've been looking foward to attending the Metro-North Croton-Harmon Shops Open House all year. I've never been before, and really wanted to go. It would have been really cool to see the shops up close and personal. I was there once this past fall for a train rescue class, but wasn't really into trains then and only saw a small portion of the shops.

Anyways, as I figured, it's been announced for Saturday October 14th, from 10am till 3 pm........and I'll be flying back from Oregon that day.

So, heads up to all of you that are interested in this kind of thing, and if you go....get plenty of digital photos for me to see!!

Really make an effort to go if you can, as Metro-North is in the process of replacing the building with new ones. Not sure when the current building will be replaced, but it can't be that far off. The curent building was built almost 100 years ago. When youget inside look around, portions have heavy timber joists. Alos parts of the building have rails, with small circular turntables which were used to roll trucks (sets of wheels) off of locomotives/cars in order to be serviced in other sections of the building. Overall, the day is fun, you get to see the equipment up close, get free train ride, and plenty of info about the railroad. The employees take pride in what they do, and can answer most of your questions. My two kids loved it every time they went.

As for the current building, does Croton have anything special instructions regarding response to the shop building due to is size, construction, age, use, etc.

I love that place!!!! So much cool history in there.

As for responses there...

Automatic alarms get two Engines, the Truck, Tanker 10, Rescue 18. We get any kind of fire in there and Mutual Aid is called as needed.

We have been given orders by the Metro-North Safety Department to not walk or operate on the actual roof, but to remain on the catwalks due to roof construction issues.

At this time we are still fine-tuning the pre-plans for the "Building 6" as well as others on the facility.

If you go over the Croton Point bridge you will see a Fire Department connection on the north side of it. We can hook up our 5" to here and pump down to units below if needed as well.

Did anyone attend this event? I just missed it (It was worth it to miss, but still wanted to go. I'd LOVE to see the Croton shops up close and in depth)
