Harrison voters won't see 2nd referendum on firetruck

The Harrison Fire Department has no plans to hold a second referendum for the purchase of a firetruck, after voters rejected a bond vote for the truck last week, Fire Chief Bill Powell said.

The department will simply buy one engine instead of two.

Voters in Fire District 2, which covers most of Harrison including downtown, rejected the $460,000 bond in a 161-to-135 vote June 14.

The Fire Department had hoped to replace two trucks in its fleet to increase water capacity and get better and more modern equipment.

The department will buy one truck with money from its capital budget, to replace one from 1985.

The truck that would have been replaced if the bond passed is from 1988 but is still functional, Powell said.

Typically, a firetruck can have a life span of 12 to 15 years, depending on usage, he said.

"We're not terribly upset because we're still getting one truck," Powell said. "We're still going to be state-of-the-art. It's not going to affect fire service."

Engine 13 is to be replaced.

Engine 11 will remain (Another Beautiful Mack CF preserved for a little while longer!! And in a couple weeks, it, in both forms, will be sitting on my shelf)
