Initial Summary:    Assistant Chief Walters, collapsed while supervising operations at a working residential fire.

Walters was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced. Cause of death is still pending.

Lee Walters, assistant chief at the Sheldon Fire District, died from a heart attack, according to an autopsy report.

Walters, 54, collapsed Wednesday morning while supervising firefighters extinguishing a large blaze at a home on Brays Island Plantation.

He was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Visitation for Walters is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at the Baptist Church of Beaufort, 600 Charles St., with services following at 11 a.m.

Fire officials plan a funeral procession at about 9 a.m. today from Copeland Funeral Home to the church.
