Yonkers - Water Rescue - 07-29-06

Frequency: YPD / YFD / 60 Control / NYPD / Empress

Units Operating: YPD ESU-4, T-3,T-2, 4th pct patrol units, 300 (citywide LT), NYPD Air Sea Rescue Aviation w/ divers / YFD E-308, R-1, Empress Paramedics

Description Of Incident: YPD recieves multiple calls of a confirmed man and dog in the water and in distress at the north end of the JFK Marina. ESU-4, T-2 on scene securing a life ring and rope to an exhausted older male. T-4 & T-2 attempting to pull the victim to a floating dock. ESU-3 suited up in water rescue suit and into the water. T-2 & T-4 & T-3 together pulled the victim to safety, onto a floating dock. Dog still in water and exhausted with a very strong current, pinned against the river wall. A YFD firefighter able lower himself down to water level, securing the dogs head above water unitl arrival of ESU on YFD fireboat. NYPD Aviation Air Sea Rescue now overhead. YFD AND YPD ESU with dog out of water and reunited him with a greatful owner. Victim checked out on scene by empress medics and released. Victim stated his dog went into the water to get a tennis ball and went out too far and was swept into the northern edge of the jetty by the swift current. Victim related he jumped some 15 feet into water to save his pet to and suddenly found himself stuck in the strong current unable to move. Several park patrons called 911 after seeing the incident unfold. Several officers treated for exposure and returned to duty. Great job to all.
