Survey Ranks 'Most Prestigious' Jobs

2 posts in this topic

BOSTON -- If you want a job that carries prestige, look to your nearest firehouse.

Firefighters ranked as the most prestigious occupation in the newest Harris Interactive poll, with 63 percent of Americans saying they have "very great" prestige. They're followed by doctors at 58 percent and nurses at 55 percent.

Scientists were ranked fourth and teachers rounded out the top five.

On the bottom five were union leaders, followed by actors, stock brokers, business executives and, last of the 23 occupations involved, real estate brokers.

The poll measured the public's perception of 23 professions and was conducted by telephone in early July. The survey has been conducted since 1977.

Why is it two of the top 5 are under paid and over worked, while the bottom 5 all make a friggin killing. I'll trade prestige for parity with business execs.
