Yonkers "Street Clear" Mirrors- A Great Idea!

The feature circled in the photo above I find really great. This is the first time I've ever seen it on an apparatus.

It's so the firefighters in the rear of the cab who are sitting facing foward can look in the mirror, and see if traffic is coming from behind them before opening the door. Typically, to accomplish this you have to turn around, crack the door open or roll down the window and peek out before opening the door fully.

I think this safety feature is simple and great, and something that should become standard on all apparatus.

Getting out of the rig into traffic, even with the "Stop" signs on the door which are often largely ignored, can be very dangerous. I know of a very narrow, busy avenue near me, and when the firefighters open the doors and even get out, people continue to speed by very close to the rig. A simple feature such as, which probaly costs less then chrome trim, can become very valuable if a tragedy or damage to a rig or another vehicle is averted.

Does anyone know the proper name for this mounting of mirrors?

What type of mounting is that mirror on? Does it fold back something hits it?

I think a rubber mount would be the best way for these. Wouldn't it would help reduce vibrations and be able to give a better or more "accurate" view of whats going to hit you if you get out? Also if it came in contact with a low hanging object it would just have to bend slightly to allow the object to pass by. The mirror appears to be smaller than normal so the MPO is still able to see around it thus if anything is going to catch the small mirror I would tend to believe that it would smack the hell out of the one on the driver's door first creating the natural reaction to turn AWAY from the BOOM....LOL
