(06/20/04) KATONAH - A power outage in Katonah Sunday morning led to the evacuation of dozens of area residents and local businesses. Throughout the village, more than 1,000 New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) customers were in the dark for most of the day. 

The problems started in the area of Katonah Avenue between Edgemont Road and Parkway just before 10. NYSEG officials say a transformer fire was causing the power surge. Concerns that the transformer itself would blow forced the evacuation of the entire block of Katonah Avenue.

Inspectors went building-to-building to check power and damage. Fire officials say despite a haphazard situation, nothing serious resulted. Investigators say only a burned part from the transformer has been found, so the cause of the power surge is still unclear.

NYSEG is continuing an investigation into exactly what led to the power surge. In the meantime, all the evacuated residents are currently back in their apartments. NYSEG officials tell News 12 Westchester power is being restored house-by-house in the affected area. Business owners say they hope to have everything back to normal by Monday morning.
