Special Weather Statement

NORTHERN FAIRFIELD-NORTHERN NEW HAVEN- SOUTHERN FAIRFIELD- WESTERN PASSAIC- BERGEN-EASTERN PASSAIC-ESSEX-HUDSON- UNION-ORANGE- PUTNAM-ROCKLAND-NORTHERN WESTCHESTER-SOUTHERN WESTCHESTER- NEW YORK (MANHATTAN)-BRONX-RICHMOND (STATEN ISLAND)- KINGS (BROOKLYN)- QUEENS- 311 PM EDT SUN JUN 18 2006

...SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING...

AN APPROACHING UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE AND SURFACE TROUGH WILL COMBINE WITH A VERY WARM AND UNSTABLE ATMOSPHERE TO PRODUCE STRONG AND POSSIBLY SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS WESTERN AND CENTRAL PORTIONS OF THE TRI-STATE MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER IN NORMAN OKLAHOMA HAS PLACED AREAS WEST AND NORTH OF NEW YORK CITY IN A SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS...AND ISOLATED SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE AS FAR EAST AS NEW YORK CITY... DANBURY AND WATERBURY.

THUNDERSTORMS WILL LIKELY DEVELOP ACROSS EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA... SOUTH CENTRAL NEW YORK STATE AND WESTERN NEW JERSEY DURING THE EARLY TO MID AFTERNOON HOURS.

STORMS WILL MOVE EAST AND NORTHEAST INTO THE WESTERN PORTIONS OF THE TRI-STATE DURING THE MID TO LATE AFTERNOON...

AND LIKELY SPREAD ACROSS THE REMAINDER OF THE TRI- STATE MONDAY EVENING.

THE HIGHEST THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER WILL OCCUR ACROSS NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY...THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY... AND INTERIOR SOUTHWEST CONNECTICUT...WHERE STRONGER LOW LEVEL WINDS WILL COMBINE WITH MAXIMUM DAYTIME HEATING. THE PRIMARY SEVERE WEATHER THREATS WILL BE STRONG DAMAGING WINDS...POSSIBLY ASSOCIATED WITH A SQUALL LINE...ALONG WITH NICKEL SIZED HAIL.

THE THREAT OF SEVERE WEATHER IS SOMEWHAT LESS FOR THE IMMEDIATE NEW YORK CITY AREA...BUT ISOLATED SEVERE STORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE. STORMS WILL LIKELY WEAKEN ONCE THEY MOVE EAST OF A NEW YORK CITY TO WATERBURY LINE...AS THEY ENCOUNTER A LESS FAVORABLE ENVIRONMENT DUE TO THE RELATIVELY COOL WATERS OF LONG ISLAND SOUND AND THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.

ANY THUNDERSTORMS WILL ALSO BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING VERY HEAVY DOWNPOURS WITH RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES IN AN HOUR. SUCH RAINFALL AMOUNTS WILL LIKELY CAUSE FLOODING IN URBAN AND POOR DRAINAGE AREAS...AND WILL ALSO CAUSE SMALL STREAMS TO RISE QUICKLY NEAR OR ABOVE BANKFULL.
