Let's Never Forget

Michael Neuner

Brewster Firefighter #585

Peekskill Police Officer #27

Who Made The Supreme Sacrifice

June 22, 1997

The Last Alarm

My father was a fireman.

He drove a big red truck

and when he'd go to work each day

he'd say "Mother wish me luck".

Then Dad would not come home again

'til some time the next day.

But the thing that bothered me the most

was the things some folks would say,

"A fireman's life is easy,

he eats and sleeps and plays,

and sometime's he won't fight a fire

for days and days and day's".

When I first heard these words

I was to young to understand

but I knew when people had trouble

Dad was there to lend a hand.

Then my father went to work one day

and he kissed us all goodbye

but little did we realize

that night we all would cry.

My father lost his life that night

when the floor gave way below

and I'd wondered why he'd risked his life

for someone he didn't know.

But now I truly realize

the greatest gift a man can give

is to lay his life upon the line

so that someone else might live.

So as we go from day to day

and we pray to God above

say a prayer for your local Firemen.

He may save the one's you love.

My dad passed away in '82 (not LODD, but still with the dept) - I have a framed version of this someplace - just got a chill reading it again....

God Bless Mike and his entire family.

I remember Mike Neuner, they had a big turnout for his funeral. I hope his family is doing well. That was a terrible day for the Brewster Fire Dept. Mike is a man of courage and bravery making the utlimate sacrafice. May he rest in peace and god bless his family.

Satch was a great cop. Whenever he was working he stopped into the VAC every Saturday night and ate dinner with me and my partner. Always trying to take something out of tragedy, the incident and circumstances involved in his untimely death is used in the FF Survival Curriculum. Those that knew him personally always take the time to let the class know how great of guy he was.

Mike and I were both firefighters in the Town of North Castle before he moved to Brewster. I remember him as a guy with an ever present smile, a kind word, and an endless amount of energy. He was a man of integrity, full of honor and a clear sense of what is right.

I hope his kids know what a great guy he was.
