In July 2005, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) awarded a contract for the design of their new fast response fireboats to Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, BC following an internationally bid design competition. Since then, the design team has been working closely with the FDNY project team finalizing the functional requirements for the vessel, assessing alternatives, and developing the concept design.

In March 2006, the project successfully completed a comprehensive Value Engineering process, during which a panel of independent marine and fire-fighting industry experts reviewed the proposed design and, in concert with the Robert Allan Ltd. and FDNY design teams, assessed the merits of a variety of suggested

options. The design process is now moving full steam ahead to the detailed design stage, which will lead to an anticipated tender call for two new fireboats in the fall of 2008.

The new fast response fireboats are designed to specifically address the fire-fighting and rescue needs of the greater New York harbour including responding to CBRNE (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive) incidents, and Hazmat decontamination. The pumping system is configured for marine fire incident response, and to support land-based firefighters with a 50,000 gpm total pumping capacity (at 150 psi) connected to a system of hoses capable of supplying water up to 5 miles inland

Very nicely done on NYCFire.net, the new fireboats look awesome, and very similar in ways to LA City FD's Fireboat 2.

Can't wait to see these long overdue boats in NYC.

These boats are designed by Robert Allan Ltd the same company that did LAFD's.. However Nichols Brothers Boat Builders did the construction of LAFD's. Robert Allan will be building FDNY's.

You can visit www.nicholsboats.com to look up the LAFD specs and floor plans. If you take a look you will notice that FDNY's would have a bunch of new things added. Some key things you will notice, small rescue boat ramp, decon area, transport area for around 20 people, communications room.

Some comparing.

FDNY - LAFD

50,000 - 38,000 GPM

140' - 114' Lenght

36' - 32' Beam

16' - 13' Depth

9' - 6' Draft

9,000 - 4,800 Fuel

1,000 - 750 Potable Water

17.4 - 15 Knots

does anyone have any idea as to how much one of those would cost?

Given the size, drive system and its abilities as a fire boat, I would put the price tag in the $20,000,000 range, give or take. I worked for a commercial shipbuilder for a while so I'm just ballparking based on what I know of costs based on custom boats of comparitive size. Also I would add to the sum, taking into account the additional equiptment specific to a fire boat. Pumps and light jib cranes on deck are similar to what many large Tug boats are equiped with, however there could be some excess cost due to increased scale.
