Firefighter Hospitalized After Collision

A collision between a fire truck and car sent a Little Rock firefighter to the hospital on Sunday. Firefighters say the collision happened just after 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Chenal and Autumn Road.

Captain Edwin Woolf of the Little Rock Fire Department says fire crews were responding to a call.

While the collision is under investigation, Captain Woolf wants to remind all motorists to use caution when emergency vehicles are on the road.

"When we are running hot with lights and sirens we always ask people to pull to the right, as far to the right as you can pull, and come to a complete stop so we can make it through traffic," said Capt. Woolf.

A passenger in the other car was also taken to the hospital. Both are expected to recover. Captain Woolf says he should have more information on Monday.

I tried to find more info on this, not much but some from http://www.firerescue1.com/news/103866/. I wonder if seat belts were worn? And what effect it had (or not) on the accident?

Two people were injured Sunday evening when a fire engine responding to a call struck a vehicle on Chenal Parkway in Little Rock, authorities said.

Engine 20 was headed east on Chenal about 5:50 p.m. when it struck a Ford Explorer traveling north on Autumn Drive, police said.

The Explorer's driver, Kelly Webb, 36, of Bryant, was taken to Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening. A hospital spokesman declined to provide any information on Webb's condition.

A firefighter riding on the back of the engine was also injured. The firefighter had "pretty minor" injuries, including a cut on his face and a black eye, and was also taken to Baptist hospital, said Capt. Edwin Woolf, a Little Rock Fire Department spokesman.

Woolf declined to name the firefighter, saying he didn't know whether his family had been notified.

At the time of the accident, the firetruck was responding to a fire alarm - which turned out to be a false alarm - with its lights and sirens on. Except for the Explorer, traffic at the intersection had stopped, police said. The firetruck's driver did not remember whether his signal light was red or green, police said.

Firefighters driving emergency vehicles generally stop at red lights to check for crossing traffic before proceeding, Woolf said. Police were investigating whether any citations were warranted.
