Article from from the Poughkeepsie Journal

Fire warning issued for Dutchess, Ulster

By Dan Shapley

Residents should not burn yard waste until the next substantial rain storm, the Department of Environmental Conservation warned Wednesday.

Lack of rain, low humidity and high winds prompted the National Weather Service to declare a "Red Flag Warning" Wednesday for much of Eastern New York, including Dutchess and Ulster counties. The warning means firefighters face increased risk should a fire start.

The DEC followed by declaring fire danger ``high'' across the state and "very high" in the lower Hudson Valley and Long Island. That warning means all fine, dead fuels will ignite readily from most causes. They are likely to intensify and spread rapidly. Unattended brush and camp fires are likely to escape.

The National Weather Service warning is in effect until 8 p.m. today. The DEC warning will continue until the region gets substantial rain.

Wind is expected to slacken overnight, lessening the risk. Substantial rains are expected Saturday and Sunday.

I know that hastings got a pretty decent size brush fire a couple of weeks ago.

The warnings are definitely no joke. Hillcrest (Rockland) was toned out for a brush fire this afternoon, homeowner called right back after dispatch to say it was involving the structure and on arrival it was a working structure fire involving at least 50% of the structure. All said and done, the main structure was basically a total loss and there was damage to an adjacent structure and a vehicle. We're only talking a few minutes here too in which it went from a brush fire to a full blown structure.
