I know I saw some at the Fire Academy the other day when I was in the book store, you might want to give them a call and see what they have.

It depends on which exam you are planning on taking. Some tests, using a generic prep book won't do you any good.

For example, the NYS Civil Service Exam (given by most municipalities in NY except NYC) there is no real way or guide to study from, except to brush up on your math, english, and mechanical aptitude skills.

Some departments offer prep classes, which should be taken advantage of to get the inside scoop.

There are a number of radically different FF exams out there......the study method for each test is different.

I used the red Norman Hall book avail @ Amazon, Borders, or Barnes and Noble.... it was a little much, although I'd rather be OVER prepared than under prepared. I do agree with above though- all of the tests are different and the best way to prepare is to brush up on basic mathematics, mechanical aptitude, and reading comprehension.

Alot of the questions are common sense, but if you look too far into them you'll get jammed up.... just skip and go to the next and come back to it if it gives you a REALLY hard time.

The one thing that will work for you automatically is if you are just out of high school or college (or still in for that matter). Over time if not testing regularly or in the mind set of testing you lose the prowess needed to make "paper decisions" and tend to look at things in a more practical approach than in a "testing mindset".

Either way in short, the Norman Hall book worked for me.... LOL

The hardiest test for me to take was norwalk CT, they asked EMS, fire sprinkler systems, and lots of fire fighting oriented questions. It was difficult to answer w/o a prior background in some of these fields especially the EMS. They give you a study guide, but if I recall correctly they did ask questions realting to different color heads on fire sprinklers and their classifications.

As someone stated earlier, any Borders, Barnes and Noble, or Amazon is going to carry a number of entrance test prep books. Unfortunately, most are based on big city tests, espescially NYC. These tests are not the same New York State exams. I remember Towns and villages tests being 60 questions, with the cities (NR, WP, MV, & Yonkers) being 75.

Just brush up on math (mutiplication and division), mechanical reasoning, and reading comprehension. Try not to erase any answers, try skipping the first 15 questions which are usually the reading comp. questions, meant to rattle your brain for the rest of the test, and go back to them later on, and most importantly, take your time. Also, take every test that comes out, resident or not, just to "get used to them".
