MORGANTON, N.C. -- Firefighters and police led a procession from Charlotte to Burke County on Monday, carrying the body of a man who died in the line of duty fighting a fire.

Kelly Kincaid suffered a massive heart attack Friday night at a home on Morehead Street. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center, where he died late Sunday.

Friends said Kincaid worked or volunteered for several different departments.

Officials arrested and charged 34-year-old David Carr on Saturday with setting that fire and another one.

"I'm very sorry. If I hadn't been on drugs, nothing would have happened," Carr said.

Carr's arm was in a sling and his face was black and blue after two inmates allegedly beat him in his jail cell over the weekend.

Carr was led to court by 12 sheriff deputies and public safety officers in Morganton. He is charged with two counts of first-degree arson. Investigators said they are looking a more serious charges, including murder, against Carr.

Officers said Carr set three fires Friday night, including one that destroyed the upstairs of Marcia Anderson's home.

"The whole block could have gone up. This guy was already putting gas on everybody else's house. I could have died. I could have been inside the house if I hadn't have woken up," said Anderson.
