That choice is merely a matter of personal preference. If you shoot 35mm film SLR and use either Canon or Nikon then I would highly recommend staying with the same manufacturer as your 35mm. Simply the lens systems all remain interchangable. Digital SLR (single lens reflex) has its ups and downs.

There are a wide variety of lenses to use for both cameras. They are all very expensive. If you get into USM (ultra sonic motors) and IS (image stability) then the price will sky rocket. A 35-80mm lens will cost anywhere from 100-500 dollars. Wide angles are upwards of 1000 dollars. And other go pretty much anywhere in between.

The images are only color and use adobe RGB scales. The only way to get B&W is to use photoshop.

No digital SLR has video mode.

Personally I like digital SLR for its ability to shoot creative pictures. You can have full, limitied, or no control over the shutter speed or aperature which makes taking any picture easy. Both models use bracketing for speed and exposure allowing you to get the perfect shot.

Picture quality is GREAT but at a cost of file space. Each picture with a 6.3 megapixel SLR in high quality mode is over 1.5MB the higher the megapixels the higher the file size.

I hope some of this information helps. I use my Digital rebel for fire shots and apparatus shots and I love it. I have used the Nikon D50 as well and I can tell you it is a nice camera. What it boils down to is cost, and interoperability. If you have Canon products sitck with Canon and vice versa.

If you have question e-mail me.
