NFPA 1582 physicals-old time thinking!

6 posts in this topic

Are you in a dept that has failed to recognize that under laws for the fire service they are required to establish training standards or object to give members the NFPA 1582 physicals? I know that depts or municipalities still decline the members of both the volunteer force as well as career force the above mentioned. Some fire service leaders as well as politicians feel that they have been doing it a certain way for years and that everything is ok. well, for those good ole boys out there, open your eyes and look at reality. the good ole days are behind us and if you or your dept falls into the old time thing you better open your eyes and wake up ! these rules, standards etc are in place for all of us.

Hudson good topic can i carry it little futher-- what do we do if we know a department dosent do the righ thing?? Department A doesnt meet NFPA 1582- has no pland to meet it!!! doesent care to meet it!! Is the any thing other then no state training?? How about cutting off mutual aid? Do the town fathers knw that they are the responsible parties?? mabey the Town should be cut off form any State funds/ County funds untill there is at least a plan in effect. Sounds harsh what do the EMT Bravo members feel.

Is it time to call theses Departments out in the public??

just my thoughts

I love how when some departments implement physicals you hear their own members complaining about them. But I can tell you numerous experiences of persons in departments I've been a member of or those I have close ties to where some of those very members who complained were diagnosed with ailments that could have killed them, most being heart problems.

This is up there with departments that don't fit test, or do fit test and then won't by the proper sized masks. I had one department that bought small SCOTT masks and had their officers label them "female mask." LOL. So much for the guys whom had to wear a small mask, but then again they wouldn't know if they had a correct seal or not being they weren't fit tested until recently.

Great topic Hudson.

if a dept does not go by the standard i am not sure who would be the right agency to contact, maybe PESH,NIOSH,OSHA OR POSSIBLY JACOBY & MYERS!!!!!!!

Calling OSHA( or in NYS, PESH) opens the the agency to be inspected at every level, not just the complaint made. I'm trying to remember from one of my college classes( too long ago), but I think PESH will only respond to imminent threats to life, other complaints it may respond to in time. I know from personal experience, someone in my command within the NYPD Transit Boro, made a complaint about air quality. The NYPD has its own inspector who came in, tested the air, and forced us to re-arrange our lounge to allow easier access to a second exit, and forced the city to provide us with bottled water since the command had no working water fountain. Making a complaint may open the eyes of higher ups who feel "we don't need to do this", and I believe they can not take any punitive actions against the person making the complaint(who can remain annonymous)

PS please excuse any typos, I'm still on pain killers after my surgery.
