The fire academy in Utica is overnight. They are up at 0530 and alot of the time would not be done with the day till 2200. It is very military type in style. I believe the main reason that it is an overnight is because it helps to instill discipline and also helps to teach brotherhood. The entire building is checked everyday to ensure that it is spotless and all chores are compleated. If one thing is not done the entire group is punished. This makes sure everyone is pulling their weight and doing there part like they will have to one day on the fire scene.

What makes rolling 8 pieces of apparatus to every scene a good idea? Do they not have response areas? Is it a manpower issue? You are stripping the equipment from one side of the town leaving it unprotected to send it to a small incident or even a false alarm on the other side of town. Not to mention the excess risk you put yourself and fellow fighterfighters in as well as the public racing across town.

Where is the academy for the VA fire departments?

What makes it a conflict of interest? If he is no longer an acting member of the union why is it a conflict?

I am looking into buying a leather helmet. Does anyone have an opinion on which is better the New Yorker or the Sam Houston? Also does anyone have a recommendation on a place to buy it from?

I put fuel stabilizer in the motorcycle every year right before the winter and I have no problems starting it back up in the spring. A buddy of mine didnt put it in and he had to go and get the carburator and hoses cleaned and replaced because the gas "gelled".

I dont beleive that we are at the point in the economy where there is going to be a huge number of arsons yet. However we may soon be getting to that point. The fact that there is such advanced ways to determine fire cause and origin I do not beleive will deter people from committing arson if there mind is set on it. It wasnt that long ago that the state had to put together an arson task force because of all the fires in Utica.

When I was in the academy we had a couple of departments who would use their recruits this same type of way. In my opinion this is not a smart idea, and good job by the Auburn Local to try to put a stop to this. The fact that it saves money on overtime should not be an issue. These recruites have not meet all the standards yet set by the state to be considered firefighters so they should not be put to work just to save on overtime. This is a very unsafe pratice that puts everyone at risk from the general public to all emergency personel working at the scene and should be put to a stop everywhere across the entire state.

FDNY uses the CPAT however they use there own modified version if I remember correctly. I believe that the only difference is that they require the people taking the test to do a longer time on the stair mill.

Does anybody know any ways to break in leather boots fast? I just got a new pair and they are a pain to get on right now.

I just graduated the academy last year and we had to do these auditorium raises numerious times during the academy, starting with a 24 foot ladder and working our way up to a 50ft. Bangor. The only difference was in this video they appear to have padding in case someone falls, we didn't (did it in the middle of a parking lot). I know that alot of departments up state still carry and use these ladders, for things such as ladder placement in a tight alley where a 35ft ladder is not long enough and aerial placement is impossible.

I feel this schedule is very dangerious. Busy night and you could be up for 48 hours straight. This creates a hazard for everyone from driving and responding to calls to fire scene operations. I work a 24/72 schedule and it is great.

You could try TransCare Ambulance (www.transcare.com) or any of the many private hospital ambulances.
