Having young drivers is not the problem. Look at it logically. They need help. The 16 yr old is not driving lights and sirens, or to actual calls. He is basically transporting the patient and EMT to the hospital, which means if it takes 5 minutes or two days to get there, it doesnt matter. I see nothing wrong with this. There obviously has been little or no problems with the Darien system. The members are selected if you read the article or visit their web site. They pick quality candidates, meaning they think those chosen are very mature. Maybe its time for the government to either step up and start paying people in these rural areas to provide these services, or stop making it so that those who can provide some help are prevented from doing so. Im not saying that every 16 yr old should be driving an ambulance just because they want to, each case should be evaluated by itself, and they should maybe undergo some type of training before they are allowed to drive. Its getting rediculous that on every level, local, county, state, federal, emergency services are always getting screwwed. Let those who want to help and make a difference be allowed to do it.

JBE, How often are the satellites called and when they are called, how often are they actually put to work? If they arent used all that often, them maybe the city would be better off reducing their number and just staff two of them for the entire city, then they would always be available?
-
If the Sat rig is just carrying hose, why does it have to be so big then, why not use a smaller vehicle instead of another rig that is just as big? Is there a particular reason that the rig needs to be just as big as the engine?
-
E64, Why wouldnt it fit in the house? The house already has two rigs in it, doesnt it? Understandable that there might have to be a little remodeling done if these rigs are parked side by side, but im sure in the long run it will still cost less money. As for it fitting on the streets, if you added 10 ft to it, it would still probably be as small if not smaller than any of the ladders that operate on those same streets wouldnt it? So there shouldnt be any problems there.
-
Heres a question, why not just give the satellite's a bigger rig, maybe a dual rear axle engine, with its 2000 gpm pump and a bigger hose bed for the extra hose? Making the rig a little longer would allow you to keep all the tools and equipment that is already carried by the regular engine, as well as the extra hose. That means one less rig that is responding to a call, one less rig to get in the way at the call, and would most likely result in money saved by not having to maintain a second piece. Has there been any thought or consideration on that?

what kind of problems?

Toss up. Backdraft I believe was set in the early to mid 80's, which is when most departments started to use packs on a regular basis. Backdraft was more Hollywood, while Ladder 49 was much more realistic. Really depends on which actors you like more.
-
I happen to think that is a great idea. There is a reason that the front line piece is out of service, therefore you are short on spares. When you have a big fire, you will not have the resources available that you would if you were using all of your front line equipment. Also the spares may have limitations, Im sure when Rescue 1 is out of service there is some equipment that either cannot or will not fit on the Tower Ladder they use as a spare. IMO, they should have done that long ago.

thats right in line with the guidelines, 1 minute for call taking 1 minute for dispatch 4 minutes to arrive on scene.

It has to do with the simple fact that Morning Pride tries to meet all three tests, while Globe and Lion only try to meet NFPA. That means that Morning Pride might be a little more expensive, but safer, and after all, if youve been getting the safest gear for some time, why would you want to go backward?

he could have made the beer last longer by adding snow too it, that would have given him some more liquid.

anyone know if any of the papers around here are going to be running this story? if so, id like to find me a copy
-
It would be a big one time cost, to outfit everyone. and in these days of big budget problems, how bout looking into having it donated? Sure no fire departments wants other peoples names on their rigs, but if the city wont accept donations, how bout some corporate sponsorships for a year or two, get some quick money, and make sure the guys who risk their lives every day have the equipment they need to stay as safe as they can.

IMO, I think many of us are riding around in our favorite rigs. Sure we all like some of the others, but the ones that we all have should have been spec'd out to meet what the rig is trying to accomplish, as well as get the men there safely. I really dont think any department in westchester or around this area for that matter buys a rig due to price anymore. Sure some rigs function better than others, but did we ever stop to think about maybe just moving equipment to different compartments making it easier to access the everyday items? Nowadays, most rigs are hard to tell who is manufacturing them anyways, until you get up close and notice the name across the front back or sides. The only one that I can usually tell from afar is ALF, because of the slight angle on the front and the grill. KME and Seagrave look very similiar, as well as most of the others.
