I try to remember to take mine off in the rig, but I do not always remember. I carry a hard case for them if I have a moment/remember to do it before I put my gloves on. I also have on occasion put my mask on over my glasses. I can still get a seal, although technically I am not fit-tested with them on. I had a pair of inserts in my volunteer department, but they disappeared somewhere when I resigned. They worked okay, but sometimes just sat crooked and bothered me. I really just have found that if you need your mask, you probably are not going to be seeing very well anyway.

Although I am not familiar in any way with their software, Stamford EMS has laptops for PCRs. This is in addition to the MDT mounted in the ambulance. The mounted units are regular Toughbooks and the portable units are the ones with the screen that spins around, I am too lazy right now to find out what they are called.

Well maybe he went with the "logic" that if the roof failed, he would be more mobile and be able to get off the roof faster with no turnout gear on? Also, in regards to the size of the hole, it was only a one story cottage, so how much of a vent hole do you really need? <--- insert sarcasm here.

Again, for all all of those people throwing that feared word, socialism, around, let me remind you that police, fire, ems are all based on socialist theory. "Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating state or collective ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods, and a society characterized by equal opportunities for all individuals with a fair or egalitarian method of compensation." Going by this definition of socialism, found on wikipedia, we are the goods, and the public is the "all individuals with a fair or egalitarian method of compensation." So, basically, socialism employs most everyone on this website.

Saw this on Colbert Report, thought it was fake! Guess not...

The "ambulance", "cappuccino" and "down" are all in English. The national language of The Netherlands is Dutch. Maybe this was at Heathrow on a layover?

Saw the news channels jumping all over possible terrorism angles... Looking to scare up a story... shocker there.

http://www.emtbravo.net/index.php?showtopi...patient+contact In this topic, patient contact time was discussed as opposed to just on scene time. If anyone knows of an article in a magazine or other publication talking about this topic, please post it here. Even if it is in an SOG, a scanned page of that will do. Just something to say other depts have this in their protocol.

Fast Fact- Mark Zuckerberg, creator and president of Facebook is originally from Dobbs Ferry, NY, went to Ardsley public schools for a bit, and his father was an orthodontist in Dobbs. He did my teeth, and tons of my friends. Too bad I didn't wear my retainer...

I figured that it would be through bonds, I am familiar with the process, I was just trying to make a point of what the public may think. I guess my sarcasm didn't come through.

Kinda confused here... Three posts away on this website is a listing for bids for 3 engines and 2 ladders. How are they paying for that and not for anything else?

MFC- Irvington does not have a tiller, Hastings on Hudson does. This is probably who you were thinking of. Stamford I think had 2 at one point, long before I ever worked there, Truck 1 was replaced in 1996, I believe.

Saw it today in IMAX. WOW! I'm pretty sure this was my first IMAX experience, and what a way to see a movie!

The Young was sold to the island of Monserrat in approx. 1992. Watching news footage of the volcano eruptions that occurred some time after that, the Young was clearly visible several times. I am unsure of the fate of it at that incident or after.

PCogs- The Money was needed to cover the costs for the FISCAL year, which runs July-June. SO there was 6 Months of Paid Fire Protection in BFD, GFD, and 1 year of paid fire protection in TORFD. Residents of Belltown are paying taxes for non existent paid FF coverage at THEIR neighborhood firehouse. Where have those FF been assigned? Remember this--- The membership of BFD VOTED to not accept the Mayors plan, and go totally volunteer. So the membership of BFD is ultimately responsible for no Career staffing in BFD. The BFD firefighters have been incorporated into SFRD houses, which covers the entire City, with the exception being LRFCo district. Remember, all Belltown calls get at least 1 SFRD Engine, and up to a full Box alarm of 3 Engines, 1 Truck Company, and 1 Rescue Company, plus the Deputy Chief. This is in addition to whichever BFD units get out of the door. Prior to the merger, BFD fire alarms got partially staffed engines from BFD, GFD, TORFD, and SFRD E7, plus whatever volunteers responded. This is only 10 or 12 career personnel guaranteed on alarms. So actually, BFD coverage has gone UP since this happened.

**************, you are right, my comments would not hold up in court. Good thing we are not in one. FFCogs- They DO still label themselves, incorrectly, as volunteer Departments.
-
**************. No. I was not. One other thing that irks me, and has for a while. In the city of Stamford there are not 5 volunteer departments. There are 3 (Springdale, Belltown, and now Glenbrook). There are two COMBINATION depts, TOR and Long Ridge. Springdale and Glenbrook stations do have SFRD Engines in them. Most of the residentents don't even have a clue to who responds to their house though. I was stationed at E7 in Springdale for a little over 6 months, and I cannot tell you how many times residents thought we were Springdale Volunteers. They assume that they are getting a full crew of volunteers showing up at their house, not a full crew of career staff. During my stay at Engine 7, multiple times NO volunteers showed up to the call, not even when we went on a call to a members house. For a while, I think Springdale only had 1 person qualified to drive E52. I hope for the sake of BFD residents that they have a better turnout than this. And I am in the same spot as FD828, I came from a volunteer Dept, and my parents still live there. If they wanted to put a paid engine there, I would be all for it!
-
Joe- Don't forget we have a former WWF (now WWE) sports entertainer among our ranks... That could put the volunteers at a slight disadvantage. Not that I'm complaining... To add to what fd828 said earlier, I cannot find the quote now, but the Chief of BFD was quoted as saying that 1 or 2 paid firefighters can handle like 90% of the calls themselves. I am not sure of the exact accuracy of the quote but the gist of it is there. Therefore it seems like they already have given up control of most calls to the paid guys. Now that they are fully volunteer, how many people do they responding to calls? How fast is there response time? A couple of months ago, SFRD Engine 1 responded on an EMS call directly across the street from BFD. E1 was on scene already when the 1 volunteer showed up for the call. I believe the volunteer was not even a driver, so if this call was not directly across the street from BFD, he never would have even made it to the scene. This does not seem like response times for BFD have not suffered. In regards to tension in the firehouses with SFRD employees in BFD and TORFD buildings, it seemed as if, for a while at least, things were okay in Springdale with E7, and things seem ok, as far as I can see, with E6 in Glenbrook.
