"Sutphen Sucks" is a common phrase heard around my job. IMO, there are many ladders that are better quality. I have been on several ladders that perform better than our TL. Again, this is just my opinion. Also, we have purchased "base models" of all of our equipment, but if they are any example of the "fully loaded" versions, then I would recommend staying away.

I recieved this email today: As some of you are already aware, one of our brother firefighters,Tom Richmond and his wife Kate recently discovered that one of their daughters, Michaela age 4, has been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Due to her young age and the fact that this disease was caught early, and with the support of family and friends, Michaela has a good chance of beating the Leukemia with chemotherapy. One of the treatment options available to Michaela, should the chemotherapy prove unsuccessful, is a stem cell / bone marrow transplant. Since learning about Michaela's problem, during the following few days we heard from three other people, ranging in age from 8 to 70 years of age, in the local area who need a bone marrow transplant to SAVE THEIR LIVES...!!! Westport Fire Department has been holding bone marrow drives in the local area for the past few years and this year we will be holding the drive on October 19th between 3pm and 8pm at Fire Headquarters. If you are not already registered with the National Bone Marrow Program PLEASE make sure you attend on this date to offer your support and the chance to save a life. By donating just a couple of tubes of blood you may well save somebody's life. Remember, cancer does not discriminate, it crosses all ethnic boundaries and age groups. Distribute this information to everyone that you know and ask them to do the same. Remember, any one of us, or someone we know could be in the same predicament at some time in the future. If you have any questions please call me at 203-673-6003. There are posters / flyers available for distribution. Just call me. Hope to see you all at the drive. Firefighter Brett Kirby Westport Fire Department Bone Marrow Drive Westport Fire Headquarters 515 Post Road East Westport, CT October 19th 2004 - 3pm until 8pm (203) 341-5000 for appointment scheduling go to www.Marrow.org for further marrow drives

A beener on every rope and a D ring on every piece of equipment solves alot of bad knot problems

I know a certain unnamed firehouse in CT that has 5 of them, and another that has 1.

All the time spent cleaning diamond plate could be better used for training. Diamond plate does not put out fires, properly trained firefighters do.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

I was wondering if the county would provide a vehicle to tow the trailers myself. The chief of Ardsley FD said that both chiefs vehicles have tow hitches and that they would be used. Not a perfect plan, but I guess that suffices for Ardsleys needs.

Rumor is Ardsley is supposedly trying to get one, because no one else in Batt. 14 will take it.

Chrome Dome- 100% right! The comments some people made about never having a major call during a parade may be true... but it may not always be true. At some point in the future, there will be a large scale incident, and half the manpower, including all the officers, and half the apparatus, will be tied up across the county. Or in Lake George. Or in Lake Placid. Or wherever the HVVFA Convention and Parade is that year. It also bothers me that "drill night" often consists of cleaning the apparatus in preparation of a parade. The term "drill night" implies just that. A DRILL. Washing and waxing, in my mind, does not constitute a DRILL. It is a sad state of affairs when more time is dedicated to cleaning than training. If the Department was well trained, and competent in all areas of firefighting, rescue, etc, then time can be devoted to cleaning. But when members do not know how to hit a hydrant, but they sure as hell know how to hit the wax, then that is unacceptable.

The main reason for 10-codes is to cut down on radio traffic, but a simple "ladder 50 responding 520 ashford avenue" is just as easy, if not easier, than "ladder 50 is 10-8 10-2 520 ashford avenue". Also, BFD, you should repeat the address of the alarm as a confirmation of the right address. how many districts have several streets that are the same name, but different label. ie ogden avenue and ogden place, or similar names such as colonial or colony.

What is the minimum percentage of drills, alarms, etc. that departments require their members to make?
