  1. A good senior man is an experienced firefighter who will take younger firefighters under their wing and show them the ropes. He in understanding of the younger guy/gal, with out babying them, and knows it takes time to get it right, but lets them know what when they are f***ing up and shows them how to fix it. A good senior man isn't afraid to get down and dirty, but also lets the younger guys get in and go to work without putting them in a place they aren't ready for. The senior man doesn't necessarily have to have the most time in, because let's be honest a lot of the older guys around the firehouse are exactly the best role models on the fire ground. The senior man, while packed with knowledge, is humble and always willing to learn and train. I consider the "senior men" to be such because they demonstrate the above, when I first started out, there were a group of guys who would show me what to do and how to do it. When it came to go out and jobs they would let me shadow them and when they thought I was ready for something, they would give me a shot at it. Then there weree clearly the other older guys who could swear up and down that they could teach every class out there and but never came out to drill. My 2 Cents for now.
  2. I don't think it wasn't that a handline wouldn't reach, I think they the IC chose the master stream because it provided a higher volume of water and could cover a greater area of land, the picture just shows where they are covering at that moment in time, I think they probably covered most of the hill with the master stream.
  3. NY Mets - 1-0 Red Sox - 1-0 NY Yankees - 0-1 Thats what I call a great start.
  4. Thanks for the info Chris. Love the pic of Seneca, my favorite slobering pooch , jumping out of the helo. I've seen first hand what a great asset you are to the whole county, from assisting Tarrytown with jumpers on the Hudson to listening to you guys work when I'm working the desk over the summer. Keep up the good work, all of us on the ground breathe a sigh of relieve when you are over head.
  5. That's a new idea! Maybe they will watch COPS on local reruns haha. Joe Arpaio, "America's Toughest sheriff," has started many new ideas out in Maricopa. Pretty sure I wouldn't want to serve time in Maricopa, between tent city, pink underwear, and pink handcuffs.
  6. Yes you did. Many departments in Florida have volunteers, like Citizens on Patrol from Police Academy. As far as I know they supplement regular police officers in order to free them from jobs that don't require a police officer to be there.
  7. Ohh, I see Hawkeye in those pics. But I saw the bailout sim in person today and it looks great. Can't wait to see the finished product.
  8. Here's my question, not just for this particular incident, but trailer fires in general. If you know you have fire under the trailer, would you still send guys in to make an attack? I know every situation is different, but if I had a trailer like this with that kind of fire and smoke pushing, and saw fire under the trailer, I would tend to believe that floors have given out somewhere or another. Either way the trailer will probably be a loss. Am I saying I wouldn't send guys in, not necessarily, just something to be cognizant of. If you fell through the floor, sure you could probably crawl to safety, but is it worth taking that chance that something catastrophic happens and you go home without a brother?
  9. What is the push button for on the console right above the cup holder?
  10. PCFD, can you post a link? On a side note, Riverside Hose of Tarrytown just took delivery of their 1965 Seagrave last week, will be posting pics later.
  11. Hey, its called job security haha.
  12. Thanks Chief!
  13. Great pics Chief! One question, does each crew man both apparatus and then respond with either their normal rig or a rescue depending on the type of call?
  14. I'm a little confused here Chief, could you clarify that a bit? A member of of my firehouse got injured while at the firehouse. He was covered by Workman's Comp for his lost wages. I'm not sure if the village covered the medical expenses or if that was covered by Workman's Comp as well.
  15. A few years ago I was taking the summer daytime FF1 class at the county. There was one member of our class who was 16. Personally, I feel that it was a waste of a spot that someone else could've taken. Not only did he not complete the class with us, he took the situation very lightly, told us that he wouldn't be allowed to be interior until he was 18, I believe, and was only there because his family was active in the FD and they wanted him to take the class, not that he wanted to be there. There are several members of my class that are on this board and can confirm this. While I believe that younger FF's who are ready and willing to take classes, priority should be given to older members who will be able to do more for the FD, as younger members have curfews as to when they can respond on alarms and therefore will be less likely to actually utilize the training they received for the better good of the department.
  16. Good work George! It was nice talking to you the other day haha
  17. In November of last year, myself and FFFORD were invited to go to the FDNY Academy for a day to see what the Rock was like. Needless to say, we thoroughly enjoyed ourself. It was an honor to have been there. Special thanks to Chief Geraghty for being our host and to everyone there for their hospitality.
  18. I thought the white hat was supposed to be driven around. Thankfully all made it out ok eventually.
  19. It means that its assigned to the Bureau of Training, which is on the door where the numbers usually are, I know you cant make it out well. I'm going to take a stab at it though, and say that CTS is Cadet Training School? I'm sure there are some brothers here who can confirm or correct me on that.
  20. Thanks Todd! Definately a lot bigger and better than our spot down by the river. Anesti, the lettering was already blacked out like that. I imagine it was deemed surplus and was going to be put out to auction.
  21. As said, outstanding work by the staff at 60 control, as well as all the dispatchers of the other agencies in the area. Without you, our jobs would be impossible. Our hats off to you.
  22. Probably not wise to use a laptop with a smoke condition.
  23. Do they need a new truck? Maybe. Comparatively to other departments in the area that will spend upwards of 600-700k on apparatus, is the 450,000 outrageous? Not entirely. I don't know much about the department or their numbers. But maybe it would make more sense to acquire a used apparatus that will better serve them than their current apparatus. Since the just got a new rig relatively recently, I think that it would make more sense to do this because I feel that the taxpayers won't want to pay for a new rig. My 2 cents.
  24. I just wanted to congratulate efdcapt115 for being the first member to earn a reputation of 100. He provides excellent info and insight to the members of this forum. Being a younger member of the fire service, we learn a lot from the posts of the more experienced and knowledgable members of this site. I wish him continued success here. I would also like to thank all of the other members who post here, as there are several other members who will be reaching the 100 mark soon. These are the guys that really make EMTBravo what it is. Thanks again.
