Our run cards are set up so that each alarm mirrors the first alarm, for the most part. We have four staffed stations, and when our BC calls for station coverage, either by declaring a working fire, or asking for stations to be covered, we get an engine into each of our stations. That way, the town is covered, and our next alarm companies are in place, ready to respond. For the most part, this is done with traffic. There isn't an emergency waiting in that fire station. The lack of fire protection argument seems thin to me. You can't always have an engine four minutes from your door. We do the best we can, in the safest manner possible. To me, that means cover assignments go with traffic.

Is someone bidding against them?

I want to know why you think you need to have all that stuff at the ready? None of that stuff EVER saved a life. Unless you use the BP cuff as a tourniquet. Seriously, listen to the wisdom of the group.

We took the squad bench out of our ambulance spec six years ago. If you have two patients, you use two ambulances. We now have that workstation design Seth mentioned. All needed items in arms reach. Radio, all controls, 95 % of your equipment. Way better, and way safer. The patient on the bench was never well restrained and moving them from bench to stretcher was a back injury waiting to happen.

Up here in NH, we have statewide protocols, and are in the process of moving towards regional multi-state protocols.

Agree to the minimalist approach. Gloves. Map of town. Pen. Phone. Sometimes my knife. Nothing on my belt. We have bags for our stuff. All you folks with the loaded belts...how long you been doing this? Heard once that the amount of stuff on ones's belt was inversely proportional to the amount of experience one has.

I really like the new Holmatro core system. Pump is in the back somewhere, and its pre piped anywhere you want on the truck. Saves on having to install reels. Grab your tool and hose, plug in and go to work.

We do a very thorough background on new employees now. Takes a couple months. We dig deep, go see all their former employers, etc.

That is awesome! Is it gonna be a colored arm band? What hateful douchenozle thought this would be a good idea? There's gotta be a hell of a story behind this. Things like this don't just happen.

I'm not a fan of the flush lights. I agree that you lose light to the sides. Is there science to this? Doubt it. Don't think anyone has done a study on emergency vehicle crashes and location, types and amount of lighting when it relates to the crash. As for cost being an issue, you pay per light. So if you get a whole row of flush lights AND a lightbar, yes you pay more. A lightbar in and of itself won't cost more. Getting five flush LEDs on the box and no bar. Yup, cheaper. Two box lights and a six or eight LED bar. About the same. I know this because I just sat with the salesman and talked prices and options of lights as we speced a new ambulance. And maintenance? Where did you come up with that? LED light bars are no more intensive on maintenance than lights.

Well, here's how MDFR handled this. http://miami.cbslocal.com/2013/06/04/exclusive-screaming-m-d-fire-captain-faces-no-discipline/

I'm betting you're missing out on an accurate report by the media, which is shocking in and of itself.
-
Holy he#%! What an ass. Yes, the Captain. Not the guy filming. He was polite and respectful. There was NO good reason for him to ask the guy to stop filming, or to tell him to leave. It only got worse from there. Smile and wave, you're a public servant on camera. Act professionally and carry on with your work. If you want, ask for guidance from higher ups about people filming. Pretty sure they'll tell ya to ignore the cameras and go about your work. Instead, you're now on the news making the fire service look fantastic!

Well, when you do your friction loss calcs, you figure out how much IS enough. You simply can't pump and endless stretch. . A thousand feet of four inch and a 1500 GPM pump get you right at 1000 gallons a minute before you start to fall off the curve, and become inefficient. So...we carry 1000 feet, and that is enough for that one pump. And, if you're doing relay pumping, you're probably beyond the point of mattering in terms of outcome. I haven't done the math for five inch, but its easy enough to do if you want to take the time. Additionally, hose ain't cheap. And, if you spec the tank at 500 or 750 gallons, you have the luxury of room in your bed, so it stays nice and low. My thoughts, anyway.

What's the level of offense for too many cartridges in your magazine? And have they resolved the LEO exemption yet?

I take a few things away from this article : 1) New Yorkers have let their lawmakers trample their rights. 2) Don't drive when your license is suspended. 3) Don't drive your suspended licensed self around in a car with broken stuff on it. 4) When breaking two laws, try to avoid interacting with the police. 5) When breaking laws, don't be carrying a handgun and be shocked when the police ask to hold on to it for a minute. 6) Here in NY, don't be a test case for the SAFE Act, especially when numbers 2 thru 5 apply to you.

Nope. That thing was a nightmare for them. From what the boys said when I was working up there, E-One bit off a little too much building a giant twin screw rescue. The frame cracked a number of times on them, and it was back and forth to the factory more than once. They were frequently running in a 20 year old spare.

That would an Arrow XT.

What's the reason for vans and mods? ALS vs BLS? Or something else?

I'm delusional? Please. To drop the magazine and reload another 10 rounder takes seconds. There was NO ONE THERE TO STOP HIM. All that stopped him was a gun. Thirty round magazines certainly made it easier, but the results would have been the same. Why does banning these magazines change anything? Criminals will still have them. Your definition has thought put into it. Most don't. Your response about magazine size however shows the ignorance that went into the thinking in Albany with this bill. You posted two types of guns. Yup, you can find 5 round magazines for them. How about all the rest? THEY DON'T MAKE THEM FOR MY GUNS. So, now what do I do? I presently follow all the laws of my state. Am I supposed to stop carrying my handgun? Do I now lose the right to defend myself?
-
A few questions for you. 1) what is an "assault weapon"? 2) what are all the law abiding citizens who own weapons that have magazines with 10 rounds (or11, 12 or 13) supposed to do with their guns now? Magazines that hold 7 rounds don't exist. This law makes law abiding citizens instant criminals. How does that help? This legislation is simply feel good political junk. There were laws in place before Newtown. Did the law against THEFT stop Lanza? How about the law against BREAKING AND ENTERING? Oh, and don't we have laws against MURDER? Did any of those laws stop him? NO. Not one. I don't understand how you think new laws will stop people like him? He obtained the guns illegally. Why do you think restricting me will prevent this from happening again?

Nice work Johnny!

Why? Where's the precedent anywhere in this country for that right now? It sucks, but that is the world we've made.

The STATE of New Hampshire did this. I am issued a 256 channel Motorola portable that allows me to talk to any dispatch center in the state. Also has PD and all the federal talk around channels for large scale emergencies. Fire apparatus and ambulances have similar radios. Only ones not included are two cities that went to 800 trunked systems. Gateway frequencies for them are provided however. The first three banks are customizable, the rest are set by the state. Updates are done every couple of years as needed.

Odd. Here in NH, by law, property owners are not allowed to touch their own FA systems unless they are a listed agent. We do all the resets on these systems. I don't see how you'd want to take on the liability of leaving a building with no protection as opposed to resetting the system.
